I currently have a 10 month old jack russell and she is the best dog. I would love to get another one eventually. I was just wondering how long you waited before getting a second one. Also, any positive or negative experiences you have had after bringing the second one into the house. Thanks!!

I have a Jack Russell named Crackers who is 6. I got him when he was 3. I just adopted another Jack Russell about three months ago. She is a female, and only a year old. I would suggest that if you do get another Jack to get a male. Only because of my experience with two males is they fight all the time, or vice versa. With two females they will probably fight all the time. My dad has two Jack Russells. His male and my male fight ALL the time. As a matter of fact yesterday they got into it and my poor Crackers had to get stitches on his leg and now he is wearing a little cast. This happens often with these two. They do ok with females but not other males. Alot of people that own Jacks will tell you the same thing. Crackers and his new sis have never gotten in a fight. They are best of buddies, and when I'm not home they hang out together and cuddle. I love Jack Russells. I have had them all my life. Good luck.

I have a three year old Jack Russell and he has many different doggie friends throughout his life. He was introduced to dogs from the beginning by taking him to a dog park but as far as living conditions....I first had a roomate with a male black lab. Toby (my jack) got along great with the lab and the two playing all day helped release all the energy Jack Russells have. Toby is now currently living with a chihuahua male and the two go together great. They were both house trained before living together, therefore they do not "mark" territory in the house. (Outside is a different story) They play great together and at times can get a little rough, but nothing a good dog owner can't control. So, I say go for it....bring home a playmate for your Jack and it will make both of their energy levels equal out.

Sorry to disagree with the answer before me, but I strongly do disagree. I have two toy fox terriers (very similar in temperment to jack russels) and they are sisters. I got them at the same time and even though I love them, I would NEVER recommend getting two puppies at a time and most breeders agree with me. You need time to bond with each puppy and integrate each puppy into your household.

Also, when they have each other from day one, they form a pack of two. You are an outsider and they don't need your leadership or approval as much. The dog whisperer says you should be ONE pack and that you should be the alpha. I have had a really hard time establishing focus and alpha status in my household with two puppies who are so bonded with each other that they are perfectly content without my approval or attention.

It's good that you have had your JR for 10 months. I would recommend that you wait until your current dog has finished all his or her basic training (household manners, potty training, sit, stay, heal, etc.). Once you have solidly established those things, then, bring a new puppy into the situation.

If you bring the new puppy in too soon, your 10 month old may revert and forget his own training.

GOOD LUCK!!!

It would've been best to get two at the same time... that way they grow up together and always have a playmate.. but since you didn't go ahead and start looking for one... the sooner the better... also get one of the opposite sex, they will get along better and their won't be as much competition for who is the alpha. Be sure and get them spayed and neutered though or you'll have ten jack russells... and thats allot of russells!
