No, a psychiatrist can be of major help to people that need it. Just go in there with an open mind about things and form your own opinion based on what happens. You should be glad that you have a family that cares about your well being, because not everyone has that in their life.

It really depends on the psychiatrist. Many psychiatrists just prescribe and manage medication, like antidepressants. Medication can be really helpful, because it can take the edge off some of your symptoms.
Unfortunately, no drug (prescription, recreational, or whatever), can solve your problems, give you a sense of purpose in life, or make your life more satisfying. Ultimately, you have to make the changes necessary to live better, whatever that may mean to you. Therapy, whether with a psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker, or counselor, can help. Your therapist won't have all the answers, but a good therapist can help you find your own answers that work best for you.
Now, when it comes to therapy, there are many different therapists, and they do many different kinds of therapy. If after a few sessions, you feel like you're not clicking with your therapist, try changing therapists until you find one who works well with you.
Best of luck!

most are not right themselves but give the man the benefit of the doubt. since your dad is paying the bill just use this as an learning experience. But one drawback is now that you have been to a shrink people will always wonder whats the heck is wrong with you. I know people who once they been to a shrink they are made the butt of some nasty jokes. Also now you have a mental health record that will always be there in the future some one might use this as a tool against you. but your father is just doing what he thinks is best because he can't control you anymore. Good Luck...they do have some nice meds to take but they do alter your personality.

Well I've had to go myself simply because I can't handle the stress in my life anymore and now have SEVERE anxitey. I've tried a few for this and for me, personally, it did nothing. They ask you a bunch of questions about your past and your current behavior and basically have you answer yourself, then they blame everything on your childhood. For some people I guess they will talk to someone and realize something that is bothering them but for me, well, I'm on Zanex now and that seems to help a lot. If your going for depression stay away from Paxil. Good luck with this whole shrink thing. Try to make it work for you if you can or fake it just to get your parents off your back.

I've seen 15 different psychiatrists, all of them were a huge waste of time and money! If you are a minor, make sure you don't tell them anything you don't want your parents to know. They love to report back everything you tell them, even if they tell you it's confidential, it's not. If you tell them you are feeling depressed and think of suicide ( I made that mistake) they will try and have you committed to the nuthouse. I was in the loony bin before, it did absolutely no good, they doped me up and sent me home when the money ran out. I was worse off when I came out than I was when I went in. My advice to anyone trying to see a psychiatrist....save your time and money.

I see a phychiatrist and a therapist, and I gotta tell you, it's great. I love having someone that actually listens to me. My therapist is super awesome too. Try it out. It'll take a while to get comfortable. If you don't feel you can open up to him or her after a few visits, then maybe look for someone else. Different psychiatrists have different methods. Don't be afraid to find one that will work with you.

I am a teen who visits a psychologist. Yes the can help big time. They open you up to ways of helping yourself. Your dad cares about you. Just approach it with an open mind. You are not crazy for getting help.
Everything will be alright, it just takes time.

My mom sent me to one once, but I didn't talk at all to him so she wasted her money and never sent me again. They do it for the money, even if you don't have a problem, they give you one. They take your words and will warp them into a problem or issue. If you say "Hi, I'm.." they will probably go and write in their little book: has issues with the unknown. They want you to keep coming back so they can make money. Anything you do or say will give them reasonable evidence that you are a psycho.

A psychiarist is like a mechanic, some are good, some are bad. Hopefully you'll get a good one and that this will be a good learning experience.
