It deoends on your body type once you burn all your muscle glycogen, then you get to the fat. What I do is sprint on a tredmill for 5 minutes, for that reason and to get my heart rate up, and then I go on another machine for about 30-45 mintues.

When your intensity is this high, it is a traning style called H.I.I.T (high intensity interval traning). Do this for about 10 minutes beofre you cardio and you should burn the muscle glycogen.

Once you get your heart rate up, make sure it is at 65% of your VO2 max. 60-70% of you VO2 max heart rate burns fat, but 65% does the most. >65% will burn muscle slower and <65% will put you in the cardio zone which is more for endurance.

Your calorie count on the machine may not be high, but that is because you are burning fat.

Taking caffenine either through pills, green tea, or coffee, will help get to the fat burning quicker taken pre workout.

I would invest in a heart rate watch instead of going by the machine. A good one cost about $50 US and you can put in your age weight and it should tell you how mnay beats per minute your doing along with the heart rate percentage.

The first 15 or so minutes are just spent burning food store energy and only after that do you start burning fat for energy. If you want to burn more fat within your 45min sessions you can increase the rate at which you exercise every 2 minutes, then laying off for 2 minutes and so on. This will trick your body and force it to work harder to provide you with the right energy levels = more fat burned.

I'd look into your heart rate more closely. That can't be entirely right.

Look up HIIT (high intensity interval training) for more information on this.

Your body stores glucose (sugar) in your liver to provide for short term energy use. After the glucose is burned up, then your body switches to fat burning. It usually takes about 15-30 minutes before your body switches from sugar burning to fat burning..

If you pay attention while you're working out, you can literally feel the switch from sugar burning to fat burning. While you are burning sugar, your breathing rate will be more rapid and you will feel more strained during the workout. After the switch your breathing will be smoother and even if you are working out harder than at the beginning of your workout, it will seem easier.
