I've seen this before and from what I can remember it's related to Jews. By writing only G-d, the word has no holy signifigance. This prevents the word from being subject to desecration. For example, if a Jew wrote God on a piece of paper, someone could burn or desecrate that paper in some fashion. Even on a computer, if the word God is written, it could be printed out, and later desecrated. This prevents that from happening.

It is related to the Old Testament ban on writing or pronouncing the name of God. However, since "God" is not the name of the deity described in the Bible (I suppose you could call it his job description), it strikes me as a little silly and unneccessary.

My GUESS is because they are so overcome by the very word in their holiest of holier than though manifestations that out of humble respect, they dare not even spell it out. Sort of like the big taboo with the unmentionable Jehovah.

I spell it gOd sometimes... that's to signify the conspicuous lack of logic in the concept. That, or the huge lack of proof.

because most people who are religious are the ones that do this.
People who do this and are so bible thumping religious to spell it that way are from the bible belt.
In the bible belt you have a high percentage chance of bieng "your own grandpa".
Spelling and education is not a high priority among those folk.

Jewish people believe that any name of God has power and that once it is written it cannot be thrown away. Therefore they miss out letters if they want to write any of his names on paper they won't want to keep forever.
