He keeps getting out of his collar on the chain in the yard. I got him a new one, and he acts fine. When he comes in the house his hair is in the formation of his new collar. I have heard if you can fit four fingers between his neck and the collar it's ok but my fingers or a man's fingers?

Why dont you consider getting your dog a harness that fits around his body and chest? Then you dont have to worry about whether the collar is too tight.

Sometimes you love your dog too much to worry whether it's a fat finger or a thin finger that should be the measure.

I think you should use one of those choke collars, where there is a metal chain in the middle of the collar. If he pulls, i'll get tight on it's own else it's loose.

Ive had three dogs, and have a puppy now. One of them was so damn active, he would get out of his collar all the time and we didnt want to tie him too tight. We got him the collar with the chain and it worked really well for him. My other dogs never even attempted to get out of their collars, it's a personality trait i think.

your finger would be fine. My dog has no problems with his being too tight, and his hair is shaped to the collar too. I can fit almost 2 fingers between his neck and the collar. As long as it can slide up and down (just not over his head) it should be fine

The best way to tell if a collar is big or small enough is if you can fit two fingers underneath the collar and it depends on the size of the dog but it can be a mans or womens .

If you stuck 4 fingers in it and he still got out, i'd try 3 fingers or 2 at the least. The collar should slide around his neck with a bit of ease so he is comfortable.

place your fingers between the collar and your dogs neck you should have at least two fingers side by side in between.
If you are using a choke chain for letting your dog out. Please don't get a nice nylon collar,
Hope that helps!

wow four fingers is going to mean that it is pretty big on him. i have always just judged it with two fingers inside the collar. the index touching the dogs neck and the middle touching the collar. you want to give about an inch or so of room. if you pull the collar straight out from the back of the dogs neck and there is more or less than about an inch. make the adjustment.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU7fU

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Well i think it would be too loose if you can put four fingers in it but i had the same problem with my dog so you should bye him one of those choker collars they don't choke the dog but they just tightn when he pulls too hard on it so he wont slip out.
