Our puppy is not able to leave his mom until March 16... so we cant have him until then... but what is the best way to introduce the two dogs? We don't want our puppy to be hurt... How long (days, weeks) do you think (from expierence) will it take for dogs to get used to each other?

we kept our pets in different rooms at first, but they were able to sniff one another through the door. We did that for a couple of days. Then we graduated to a baby gate so they could see eachother, too. That lasted a couple more days (we still use it though...just once in awhile) Then, when they finally got to get together, we kept a careful eye on them and made sure one didn't hurt the other.

It would be best to have the dogs meet for the first time somewhere besides your house or yard or any place that your golden feels is his territory. It's true that goldens are very gentle, but all dogs should be introduced in an area that doesn't belong to either one. Then once they meet and sniff around a bit, have someone take the older dog home first and restrained when you arrive with the puppy. It is also a good idea to keep them separated while you introduce the puppy to the house. A little bit at a time, don't let the puppy wander all the rooms in the house at once as it can be overwhelming. Always supervise them both when they're together. I'm looking to get a new dog soon too and I already have one, so I'll be taking my own advice! LOL! Hope it works for you, congrats on your new family member!

Your Golden, by the breeds inherited nature is a very gentle animal, albeit somewhat on the large side. Most likely the Golden will take the puppy in as a kindred spirit, rather than see it as a competitor. I would expect that the Golden will still vie for your attentions, but not to the point of hurting the pup.

No matter, it will be evident almost at once how they will get along, and if there is 'tension' then do keep them apart and go gradually with the introduction.

Your dog will have enough milk to feed her puppies for as long as they need it. Just keep a watchful eye on them to make sure they are all on different **** each time they feed. When your puppies are about 4 weeks old start to feed them solids for example some cooked mince beef or bread with milk. Feed your dog three times a day and be sure she has lots of fresh water.

My older dog took a couple of days to warm up to the new pup. After 3 days they were best buddies. You'll have to strictly supervise them for the first few days. Remember to treat the older dog as alpha dog.
