The bride-to-be and the groom-to-be go to the registry counter at a couple stores. They will give you a scanner you will use to pick out gifts they would like to receive. That way your guests, and the shower guests know what type of stuff you want and you don't end up with a bunch of stuff you don't want/need, or duplicates of gifts. You can also register on-line at some stores.
Once you register, people can go on-line and see what you want, or they can go to the store and have your registry pulled so they can find what you registered for. After the wedding, most of these places give you a one-time 10% off anything "left" on your registry for you to purchase yourselves.
By the way, etiquette says you don't list where you are registered on any invitations, wedding or shower. That information is supposed to be passed along by word-of-mouth.

Ever gone to a wedding and seen that the couple got 3 blenders and 200 glasses/
A bridle registry is a "Wish List"
You do it at one store.
You pick out all the items that you would want and register them with the store.
You tell all your friends you are registered there.
When a friend goes to buy you a wedding gift or a shower gift, they go to the store and see what is on the list and they buy one.
The store crosses this item off the list so no-one else buys it, so there is not duplication and store returns.
The system works well for the bride, the gift givers and the store.

You and the SO go to just about any major store nowadays. You fill out some paperwork (names of both of you, celebration date and maybe one or two more identifyers) Then hopefully they give you a UPC scanning gun. You wander the store and shoot the UPC of whatever it is you want and the unit will ask you how many. Later when people want to find out what you need they can get the list printed by giving either your or your SO's name then if they decide to purchase a gift off of the registry they shoudl also have the cashier scan the item on the printed sheet so that onyone that gets the list after them know that the gift is already purchased in the hopes on not getting 6 toasters.

You can go to any department store or even Target, Bed Bath & Beyond and register (pick out) for gifts that you and your fiance need for your home. When you have the bridal shower, the guests will either give you money or shop from your registry.

Find a store you like, such as dillards, walmart, etc. go online are in the store. Registering means you pick out the gifts you want, so your wedding party have a list to choose from, so they want duplicate your gifts, are get you something you dont want. Pick 2 stores one expensive dream store and one reasonable store like walmart.

You go to a store together where they have a bridal registry, such as Macy's, Fortunoff, Target and you register for things you need for your home, towels, pots, pans, dishes, etc. You go to the registry desk tell them you are here to register, you pick out things you want and people purchase them for the bridal shower.

You go to specific stores (department stores, specialty stores...) and choose things that you want. The store will keep a list of what items you have chosen and your wedding guests can access those lists and then purchase gifts that they know you will like!
