I am thinking about trying meditation to help me relax. I have a very busy life that is quite stressful right now and so don't have a lot of time. A web link or book recommendation would be greatly apreaciated.

Thanks

I am looking for a form of helpful meditation that you don't have to pay to learn. TM seems to me to be mediocere from what I have heard and I don't like the fact that some people are getting rich off it. I don't think that's entirely ethical.

I didn't mean to be dismisive about TM as a practice, though some practioners I have met didn't impress me very much. As a practice I don't know anything about it realy. And now I don't know how to reverse my thumbs down on the answerer who suggested it.

Over a year ago I started contemplative meditation and centering prayer. It has been fabulous for me and my husband. We are much calmer people now!

Here are some sites and resources:

We have read some of Fr Keatings books for the principle of centering meditation, not necisarily for the religious Catholic stuff (I'm not Catholic). We also had a few sessions with someone who taught us how to get centered and practice the meditation.

This is very simple and you can do it anywhere, anytime: watch your breath. Put all your attention on the inflow and outflow of breath. Eventually you may reach a point where you aren't breathing but, rather, "being breathed". Consider - if you didn't consciously focus on taking in breath would you still breath? Of course you would! Once the breath is coming in and out and you are simply watching it happen you are very relaxed indeed. Then stay with the meditation for as long as you like.

I found that tip in the Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. Try that book if you want further info.

" Transcendental Mediation" works wonders.
I'm sure you'll find a link to more information.

Later: Regarding your late entry. You do not have to pay to learn how to effectively practice Transcendental Mediation. I paid, but regret it. Ill tell you how FREE!
It IS effective! Its not mediocre - try it for yourself before you disqualify it.

I was going to say "Darvocet" until I looked more closely at your question. At a glance, I thought it was "medication" you were looking for.
