Labor pains feel like menstrual cramps. Start timing how long the cramps last and how long in between them. When they get 10 minutes apart, call your doctor.
Not everyone loses the mucus plug before labor, and sometimes it takes a while for the water to break. If your water does break, it is definitely time to go to the hospital.

congrats, first of all!!
I understand your curiousity. I also had the same questions. Your "cramps" could be the start of labor, and then again, it may not be. But I will tell you that when you are in labor, you will know.
Just pay attention to your body. Some of the things I noticed was the water breaking (it feels more like a period than a gush, like they make you think in the movies), and before that, I was extremely edgy, and I cleaned like there was no tomorrow. I moved the furniture around in my home in our living room and our bedroom, and I scrubbed the baby's room we had set up. My poor husband had eight or ten phone calls at work from me "just calling to say I love you", and had to deal with an irrational woman. I look back and laugh, but then I didn't know what was going on.
Watch your signs. If your "cramping" becomes more intense, and grows closer together, then call your ob's office - they will tell you what you should do, or if they want you to come in. But just so you know, I had 4 "false alarms" before the real deal. Don't be afraid to go in if you feel like you need to. They are used to it, and they will want to see you if there are signs of labor.
Hang in there! It is all well worth it!!

Sometimes the water doesn't break till later on during labour and if if your water did break it doesn't mean that labour will actually start right away either. With my first pregnancy it felt like mentral cramps, very mild ones... but they were consistant. That's what you want to look for a pattern in the cramps regardless on how painful they are. So even mild cramping consistanly can be the beinging of labour. I started feeling them around 1am in the morning... very mild and they stayed mild till about 11am 12pm in the afternoon. I called my midwife and told her to meet me at the hospital cause they started getting painful. She wanted to come to my house and check to see if I was at least 5cm because if I wasn't they would have to send me back home. With the pain I was I was like 'we're going to the hospital and if I'm not 5cm by now and this much pain we're in trouble.' So made my midwife meet me there and sure enough... I was 5cm. My midwife asked how I knew... and I said 'the pain'
So you'll know when it's time... My advice... if you're feeling mild cramping and there's a pattern to them, REST, REST, REST, get something light and small to eat because you might have a long night ahead. Maybe shower and braid your hair, get your partner/family/frineds to give you a foot rub or something. The key is to watch for the pattern in the contractions... Best of Luck and Congrats... you'll soon be holding the most perfect little one in your arms!!!

i'm no longer an authority, however the pointy pains sound like contractions, have your waters broken? it may be an early point of labour, once you're 40 weeks pregnant flow to the well-being center and get checked over, greater valuable secure than sorry, good success!

Well it sounds like you might be starting labor pains. It does feel like menstrual cramps only they will get harder. In order for it to be real though you have to be feeling pain in your lower back. I hope you have your child soon, good luck!

you will definatly know it whe you are ready. I lost THE PLUG and I still had to get induced and have my water broken 3 weeks after the Plug came out. I would never get induced again. He wasn't ready.

it very well could be the start of labor as some women tend to experience different feelings when they are getting ready to deliver if they start getting stronger and closer together then get to the hospital and if you are not sure call your doctor he may want to see you

Most women dont go into labor on their due date. All it is, is an estimate. If its your first baby you could be late too, although i gave birth on my due date, its not very common too.
