Redheads usually have one less layer of skin cells... most people have three layers while frequently redheads only have two.

Therefore for any given depth of cut or wound, it would be relatively deeper on a redhead, leading to relatively more bleeding.

If you combine that with the normally pale complexion of redheads which would make blood show up more clearly than on a darker-skinned person and you have your answer.

Unfortunately x_ill (below) doesn't know HIS gluteus maximus from his humorus and is obviously talking out of the orifice between the former... there are indeed many layers of skin which are classified into THREE main layers. These are the same three layers as are used to classify the depth of burning - first, second and third degree burns refer to the depth of skin tissue that is burnt. Some people have an important protective part of one layer missing - most notably redheads.

I have yet to come across a Thai redhead. Sounds like urban myth.

It would indeed seem that this is an urban myth. A recent study shows that redheads have average coagulation - 'clotting' of the blood.

Interestingly though, the study did seem to suggest that they bruise more easily, check it out for yourself:

not sure. GLH (male 48 uk) obviously doesn't know his rump from a hole in the ground. The epidermis has between 25 and 30 "layers" of dead cells alone. There are 5 regions in the epidermis, Hmm lets see if I can remember: Stratum corneum, lucidum, granulosum, spinosum, and germinativum (I actually remembered my cute mnemonic from school). The dermus has 2 layers, papillary and reticular. The "skin" itself DOES has 3 layers as the guy from england points to, they are epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous. So are redheads missing their dermus? lol

As far as redheads being more prone to bleed or hemorrhage, I'd chalk it up to an old wives tale.
