What you have to understand before you discuss this with Christians is-
a) God takes every life, it's just a question of when and where
b) The Amalekites were terrible people who had centuries of warnings to repent, yet continued to do the worst things you can imagine to both their own people and others. God gives a chance to repent and is patient, but finally has to back up his threats.
c) God created life, he has the right to take it away. People don't. God knows where the infants are going and took care of them in the next life. Compared to the next life, this one is an insignificant blink of an eye. Plus the next life is better than we can even imagine. Infants get to go there (scripture indicates this). They probably wouldn't have had ideal lives anyway.

Look at it from God's priorities, and you will see that it is a logical thing to do to the enemies of a people that follow you. It may seem harsh to us, but where were you when God made the world?

God was fighting His enemy.

Exodus 17:14 - And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

Exodus 17:16 - For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

I cannot second guess God on that one.
It's not something that I'd advocate today at all.
But I honestly don't know enough about the context in which God ordered this to be done. I know God's character, and that He is fair beyond anything man can comprehend, but I really can't explain it adequately.

The Amalekites were marked for destruction because of their cowardly attacks against the weak one of Israel previously. Compare Deuteronomy 25:17--19.

Huh... I never would've guessed that "Gandalf" is a christian.

Back to the question...it's almost like the scripture refers to an enemy with which Israel was locked in a life-or-death struggle in a hostile and unforgiving world... I guess I'm not sure what to think about it, because I really can't put myself in their shoes. Their world was so vastly different from mine that it's really hard for me to pass summary judgment on it.

You need to read the whole chapter...this is why most religions are wrong, they take only certain scriptures and turn them around and take them out of context...

Not that a scripture translated from 'man' has much credibility, but I'd say that he'd rather have people die, then suffer endlessly
