I do 0 pushups then set the gym bench record. Trust me, the iron game is a way better way to go and grow. So stop doing bodyweight resistance exercise (it's like doing cardio or Pilate's, bro. It just isn't manly.) and start getting your actin and myosin to push those muscles around.

Pushups will only build so much muscle since eventually, your body will just end up not being challenged enough to continue muscle growth from them and the amount of mass gained will not be significant. They are a good way though to build endurance though. If you want to build more muscle mass, I'd recommend doing weight training.

From what I understand from my friend who is a doctor: push-ups are one of the best exercises because they work so many different muscle groups, and force different muscles groups to work together. He says it is one exercise that should always be done. But it does not build muscle mass because you are limited to your body weight. I use them as a warm up before I weight train. I do 50 push-ups then work out.

Push ups will tone the muscles. To "build" muscle mass, they require strenuous exertion to the point of fatigue or failure and of course fuel from the proper nutrient.
