He was a conscientious objector which means he took the legal course to avoid fighting in the Vietnam War due to his religious beliefs and lost 3 years of his profession. What other athlete has left his or her sport for any reason for three years?
He was a promoter for his fights and he got carried away sometimes. He has since apologized to Joe Frazier and they have appeared together at many sporting events recently.. His opponents were also rude to him not calling him by his right name and he punished them in the ring for it. Floyd Patterson and Ernie Terrell being two of them who kept referring to him as Clay.
He was not a racist. He pointed out unfair practices that were going on in the U.S. in the 60's such as people not being served in restaurants because of the color of their skin or having to sit in assigned seats, etc. He was fair to all people he dealt with white or black.
Terrell Owens is a selfish athlete. That is all I have to say about him as he doesn't even rate a response. He is just not that important.
What did Ali's opponents say about him. Terrell wanted to shut his mouth. Foreman said Ali fought a great fight against him. Most of the things said about Ali involve the word respect.

Dude, comparing Ali to Terrell Owens is crazy! Ali was never anti-White, he was just pro-Black. If he was such a racist, why did he have a White man as his trainer in Angelo Dundee? This was back at a time where Blacks had to fight for their basic human rights and were treated very poorly and Ali stood up for the injustice of the Black people by refusing to go to war and kill a bunch of people who hadn't treated him and other Blacks nearly as bad as the White people in his own country had. As far as him being rude to his opponents, a lot of times that was nothing more than a physce job to get into their heads and Ali did a lot of clowning. I don't think he really hated any opponent that he faced, but he wanted to get in their heads and throw them off their game. And by all accounts, Ali was a very generous and giving man who would give you the shirt off his back or his last buck.
Dude, Terrell Owens is a selfish, self centered jerk who has been all about Terrell. This guy doesn't even know what the word "team" means. He doesn't respect any coaches or authority figures and feels that he can do anything he wants. And then pouts like a little baby when things don't go his way. He even disrespected Bill Parcells after he retired by saying it was good he left. How many rings has Owens won? He has the nerve to diss Parcells? I don't think so! He couldn't even get along with Donovan McNabb, who, by all accounts, would be good friends with a Space Alien if one landed in his backyard! Owens is a first class jerk and to even be mentioned in the same sentence wirh Ali is, in the words of Mike Tyson, "Ludacris"!

First off, as a white boxing enthusiast who met Ali twice and followed his career both inside and outside the ring I have to tell you Muhammad Ali is not anything close to a racist. He is about the most anti-racist person in Michigan (yeah we both live in Michigan).
You are obviously young, so the blogbaba will cut you some slack and educate you. Although Ali in his boxing career fought the greatest single list of talent the heavyweight division ever assembled, it is for his exploits outside the ring that the title
"The Greatest" will forever be his legacy.
He came along at a time when not just Black American, but all of American needed a leader. His name and association alone took the Black Muslim movement from a two bit militant group to a political force. Not to down play racism as a problem today, but back then it was a social disgrace to the entire country, and a threat to peoples lives as great as any war. His stand on the Vietnam war, was as courageous and as costly to him as actually enlisting. Ali most likely saved more lives by bringing political pressure on Washington to end that insanity just a little bit earlier than any military service would have brought.
Just a few words from him freed hostages and eased tension between Iran and America during the 80's. I do not share his religious beliefs, but I share his sense of justice, and his love humanity, all humanity. Calling a man like Muhammad Ali a racist is simply to childish to take seriously.
Ali is not embraced, he is beloved and one of the most influential and respected men of the twentieth centurary. Terrell Owens is not loathed, he's laughed at, and getting his name mentioned in the same sentence as Muhammad Ali is the most significant accomplishment of his young life even if it is under these demeaning circumstances.
You want a Ali quote, how about this. At the hight of his boxing career in the ring after having just defeated what everyone but he thought was an invincble George Forman Ali, the most famous Muslim since Mohammad himself quoted something along the lines of "If God is with me, no one can be against me". The fact that the Torah, Old Testament, and First half of the Koran are the same book, might just be significant, but I'm pretty sure it's in all three.

terrell owens is not even a top 10 receiver anymore. didnt he lead the NFL in drops last year? ali was cocky but he could back it up. plus ali did not have teammates that he had to consider affecting with his arrogance as owens does. its like owens doesnt realize the importance of getting along with teammates, especially in football. he turns every team he goes to into disarray because he is such a self centered teammate.

I dont love Cassius Clay. I give him respect because he is a great boxer. It doesnt mean I have to like him as a person. No one is perfect though. Now to answer your question, Ali was a boxer and in my opinion boxers are allowed to be a little loud mouthed and cocky. It is a one on one sport. It is also a violent sport that deals with pride and measuring up against another boxer. So let the boxers be cocky and say all they want. You have the option to like or dislike them. Who is more boastful than Floyd Mayweather?? I dont like him but I admit he is a great boxer.
Now TO on the otherhand has no excuse for the way he acts. He is taking part in a sport that is based on sportsmanship and being a team player. He is cocky, arrogant, selfish, ignorant and all about himself. He disrespects his team, fellow team players, coaches, fans, and himself. He is garbage.

my boyfriend and i discuss this all the time. i agree with you and not just because we are cowboys fans. Ali had no problem throwing his Olympic medal away and then when people bent over backwards to get him a replacement, he took it. i do not think he is a humble man by any means. i feel sorry for him now that he is ill as a person but not a boxer. he brought all of this upon himself.
I also have a problem with black athletes that make comments about white people, like supposedly Barry Bonds and Charles Barkley did. Why doesn't anyone call them out on this?? The kicker is that the majority of athletes that do this are or were married to white people at some time and probbaly have children that are mixed with black and white. the shows they ar ashamed of their kids.

Because, people hate people that are better then them and when those people fail or get ill humans tend to mend with them. Kind of like when a dog bites you. you hit it back then you feel bad for the dog and say," It wasn't the dogs fault i most of done something have made it bite me.

excellent question --- i have wondered this myself. must be the times in which he lived -- there was no athlete like him at the time, and he backed up his brash talk with action. i doubt he would have thrived in a team sport though. but a one on one sport where the athlete is 100 percent self accountable fit his loudmouth style perfectly. he protested the vietnam war, went to jail, stood for a lot of controversial issues and stands out in the archives of the 60s and early 70s. that must be the answer.
