The 7,62, by far. The 7,62x51 NATO uses a much heavier bullet (in military loading, usually a 147gr.) as opposed to the 5,56x45 NATO (55-62gr.) The heavier .308 bullet developes far and away more energy than the light-weight "poodle shooter" round, which was developed more as a "wounding" round than a "killer"

Depends on what your 7.62 is. Could be a .30-06, or a 7.62 Tokarev.

Depending on which 7.62, x39, x51, x54, etc. Generally speaking the 7.62 if going to outperform the .223 when comparing the same type of ammunition.

7.62 or .30 rifle rounds have better stopping power than 5.56
However, it is different when you're talking about pistol rounds such as 7.62x25mm Tokarev rounds or the really weak 7.62x17mm rounds. They don't compare with rifle rounds.

The 7.62x51 NATO hands down. Even the 7.62x39 Russian round is a better stopper.
The 5.56 is intended to inflict more 'losses' upon the enemy. By disabling, rather than killing, a soldier you create a greater burden on the enemy.

7.62
I don't know why H got so many thumbs down he was correct ..
The 5.56mm or .223 round was designed to injure the enemy thus effectively taking another soldier or two out of the fight to drag him away and care for that injured soldier.

the 7.62 is a larger bullet, therefore will have the most knock down power. the 5.56 will have more penetrating capability. of course you must factor in range etc. but under equal conditions thats yout answer.
