"If I did not believe in God, I should still want my doctor, my lawyer and my banker to do so."

Sure is rough getting the crap stuck back in your face for a change. I can ask God to forgive my lack of love for a few minutes...you are lost forever.

Again, this is a generalization. Not every person who is an atheist thinks the same way. I doubt that many care about whether their doctor or lawyer or banker believe--they would more likely care about how well the person performs his/her job.

Atheism is not a religion. They do not have group meetings or rules. They are simply individuals who do not believe in God. Enough said?

I don't get it, why would it matter what they believe?

Now that I read the other answers, I have changed my mind - I too would prefer an atheist to be doing these jobs, partially because, let's face it, christians are not known for their intellect, also because of that part about knowing that what they do is up to them, not some mythical being that will somehow magically get them through a difficult operation or something.

Glad you asked this question, as I'd never considered before how dangerous a christian could be in these arenas!

Belief in God does not make anyone a better person than being without belief in God. I wouldn't expect Christian bankers, doctors and lawyers to be any different than atheist bankers, doctors and lawyers. I wouldn't feel more "comfortable" trusting people who are believers than I would trusting people who are nonbelievers.

I represent only one atheist: Myself.

The statement presumes that the faithful have a monopoly on morality. I work through the same moral issues as anyone else, and on the whole I think I do well.

I want my doctor, lawyer and banker to do their jobs well and faithfully, in accordance with the highest ethical standards of their respective professions. Religion doesn't enter into it; just follow the appropriate ethical codes.

I'd rather they didn't, but frankly it's none of my business so long as I get good service.

Are you reading from some 1950's "How to convert an Atheist" handbook or something? Because this stuff is pretty lame!

It goes on the assumption that Atheists believe that morals come from god and only god. And any Atheist will tell you otherwise.

I don't know who said it. What I do know is being an athiest does not make a person deceitful or untrustworthy any more than being a believer makes a person honest and trustworthy. There have been many believers in my own experience and throughout history who have been bald faced liars. In my experience, actions speak louder than religion.

I do not care who does or soesn't believe in God, as long as they act fairly, morally, and with some common sense. I do not want to know if my doctor or lawyer is a satanist, an athiest, or a chirstian, a muslim, a jew...who gives a sh*t?

I'd prefer an atheist doctor, lawyer and banker.

No I wouldn't want that, I want my doctor, lawyer, and banker to be of sound mind.

Don't hurt yourself patting yourself on the back. If this is how you "rub s.h.i.t. back in our faces" you need to work at it a bit more. These are just dumb.

I agree with Mathew S. Why is that my problem. When you do a job you should do that job regardless of who it is that stands in front of you. I tell you what 8% of doctors do not tell their patients some medical options because it contradicts their believes. Can you imagine that. Thee might be a treatment that can improve or save your life but because someone disagrees with it, they won't tell you about it.

Religion has its place and that place is not at work. Practice you faith at your own time.
