Public Tansportation (MTA) is perfectly safe... and you don't have to worry at all. Just know that even though it is safe it may not be the quickest mode of transportaion. Asfore that dope above me that would not know her head from herAss... I love it when people that don't even live in the city try to talk trash without knowing what they are talking about. All I can tell you is be aware of your surroundings and you'll be just fine.

I Grew Up In LA, Depending How Small of A Town Your From You Will Feel Either Comfortable or Uncomfortable. LA population In 3 Million Close to 4 Million.

There is Allot of People Everywhere You Turn. USC is in a Somewhat Bad Area But It All Depends On How You See It? You won't walk down an Empty Alley or Anything Like that, Just use Common Senses On Your Surroundings. Public Transportation is the Best In LA, and Completely Safe, Then again Use ur Common Sense

Don't Talk To Stranger and All that Stuff That you Already Know. If Anything bad where to happend in a public transportation area there are Intercoms and You can contact the Police,Fire,or The Public Transportation Directly. LA is a big City, and Using Your Common Sense You Should Be Fine.

And if You were to be lost in a public transit you can just ask the bus driver, rail conductor, and they will tell you how to get around.

I Wouldn't Recommend Getting a Car if It's Your First Time In LA, The LA traffic might overwhelm you, most likely would get lost as well.

the metro is pretty safe in most areas during the daylight hours
and if you are coming from lax, there is a direct bus line
from the city bus center at Lot C, -thats where all the city bus drop you off if you going into lax,
you can board a line 42 which will take you directly to USC
(if you friend wants to pick you up and you both have cell phones
Lax has a free cell phone parking lot just on Airport just north
of 98th street
the only restriction is that the driver must stay with or in the car
then when you are ready you just give you friend a ring and
and hes on his way

USC is in a bad neighborhood, but I've taken public transportation during the day all around LA and never had a problem. Key points to remember:
-Don't talk to anyone you don't know
-Either carry one of those security wallets that goes under your clothing, or keep your purse close at all times
-Don't take any public transportation after dark (around 7pm)

If you're visiting a friend, they can tell you where the bad areas are...don't exit the buses or Metro trains anywhere other than your destination. I

USC is not in a safe area. You should not be taking public transportation to/from that area at night. I would even be concerned taking public transportation in that area in the daytime.
The actual campus is safe because they have lots of private security. Don't walk alone at night!
Hopefully, your friend or one of her friends has a car. Can you rent a car?
Good luck and be safe!

Sophie said it best about the MTA.

I disagree with Manny, though. You can navigate around LA just fine with a car, and you will feel safer. But I'm guessing you either don't drive and can't afford a rental.

The area around USC is rough, however the musuems are close by, so you'll have plenty to do.

Use common sense, keep your wits about you. don't get drunk at any frat parties, you'll be fine.

Sheesh, regardless of safety issues, assuming you're flying into LAX it is just a complicated deal to take public transportation to USC from LAX, especially for a first timer...I would beg your friend to meet you and/or pick you up. I guess you could take the green line (subway at LAX) to ---Nope, I just checked the MTA info board---there is no way to USC from LAX without a transfer to a bus

Public transportation is not safe, rent a car, LA is so wide spread, if you take public transportation, you will probally get to visit 2 spots all day...definitely rent a car.
