I don't know what kind of frosting you're going to use, but I'll give you my recipe that my kids love and request for every birthday.
One tub of cream cheese frosting
One tub of toasted coconut frosting (like you'd put on German Chocolate cakes)
Two heaping tablespoons of crunchy peanut butter
1/2 tsp vanilla
Slightly melt both of the frostings in the microwave and pour them into a bowl. Slightly melt the peanut butter and put in in the bowl, and the vanilla. Stir well with a wire whisk, and let cool slightly if needed. Spread onto almost any cake you like. It's SO good! Garnish with chopped nuts if you'd like. You can also add cinnamon for a different flavor.
Consider mixing different frostings that you can buy at the store. Also, cream cheese frosting is the easiest thing on earth to make (powdered sugar and softened cream cheese) so consider using that as a base in the future, and dressing it up to go with your cake. For instance, you can add lemon extract and lemon zest to it for a vanilla/lemon layer cake, or cherry extract to go over a chocolate cake, or vanilla extract for cinnamon rolls.

take the frosting out of the tub & put in a mixing bowl or in the bowl of a stand mixer. add a tablespoon of the extract of your choice (lemon, almond, vanilla, rose or orange water, etc...), fresh finely chopped herbs (like mint or lavander, maybe citrus zest) or even some spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, even cayenne pepper or ground chipotle pepper - works great in chocolate). blend on high speed to add more air to the frosting and completely mix in the ingredients you added. this will not only give the plain frosting a little extra flavor, but it will make it lighter & fluffier and will nearly double the amount of frosting you have so you can frost more cupcakes/layers/cakes etc...

Take it out of the container and add some extract flavoring (like vanilla or almond), then mix. If you got one of those frostings that are really thick you can add a couple tablespoons of milk to thin it out some.
Adding some shredded coconut on top will give it a personal touch.

Usually food taste better when someone else makes it due to your relationship, for example if it's a loved one or a close friend you tend to adore something that they do for you than what you do for yourself. When your out in a cafe or restaurant eating specially made meals, it taste better because you 'know' that a 'professional' cooked your meal and that gives you a taste of 'hungriness'. So it's sort of a connection your stomach has with your brain, the brain sends your stomach a message on which food will taste better, your own, your companions or a chiefs, that's why you lose interest in food that you made because your brain tells you 'meh it won't taste good because YOU made it' making us lose appetite altogether.
