Only the closest friends and family. Everybody else should just get invitations to the wedding.

One rule I read about (which makes common sense) is you never invite anyone to an engagement party or bridal shower that you don't plan on inviting to the wedding. You look like you're just looking for more gifts. And I agree with everyone else, that the engagement party should just be close friends and family. Keep it small. The big show is the wedding.

Whoever is throwing your engagement party (not you) will consult you on who you want to invite. Usually family, the bridal party, and a few close friends. It's not a big "do", like no gifts, just drinks and snackies.

Close friends and family ....as far as family you don't have to branch out too far unless there is maybe a special aunt or uncle that you would like to have there...parents and grandparents are enough!

Close friends and immediate family...I would leave out the rest and they can come to the wedding.
