I have a chihuahua that has several medical problems but I just can't afford it's care anymore. It's gotten too expensive and I don't want to neglect it's condition. I don't want to take it to a shelter or pound because I don't want it put down if they can't find a home for it. I live in Ventura so anything within the county or in Santa Barbara county will do nicely. If there's a place in LA county I'd even be willing to drive there too. I just need a place that can care for or find a willing family that can afford to care for it.

Just to clarify - The vet's say that the puppy will lead a healthy life as long as (very expensive) medication is taken regularly. I was prepared for vet costs but not $5,000 worth in three months.

I did ask the vet what to do and he said the same thing ... find a chihuahua rescue. Problem is that I can't find one and don't know where to start. What I want to know is if anybody knows of an actual place and contact number of a good one.

Hi. Try this link http://www.chihuahuarescue.com/ I think these people are located in LA county. They will be able to help you, care for the dog & eventually find it a new home. Best of luck to you and the pooch!

Seriously, I love animals and i hate to put any animal down, but most people or agencies would ask a vet to examine the chihuahua first to see how serious the medical problems are, if they are some what treatable then maybe someone would take it, but think about it, who in there right mind would adopt a pet with terminal medical problems and pay thousands of dollars just to keep it living for a short time, most likely if it to expensive for you it is to expensive for most other people. Only you would pay for it because you have a bond with the dog, but if the animal is to sick to save its not worth the money or the time to save it and adopt it out, my suggestion is to ask a vet to see if its medical problems are treatable and will allow the dog to live for several years, or even with treatment the dog will die, if thats the case i suggest you just keep it and nuture it until it passes on or have it put down.

go to petfinder.com and click on rescue/shelter groups and you cna look by state to see if there is a group in your area that can assist. i saw in santa barbara there is a group called operation buddy that may be able to help. good luck!!
i don't agree with mimi about admonishing you for not thinking of the cost of having a pet. our dog was attacked and brutally mauled by another dog in december and the bill was over $300. he was really hurt and the other owner did not do a thing or even say he was sorry. the police and our apartment complex said because the dogs were on leashes, we can only go after them civally for damages and not criminally. our court costs would be more than the money we had to borrow to help our poor dog get help. i bet most people don't stash money away in case their dog gets attacked!

Unfortunately, what's ultimately gonna happen whether you take it to a vet (that you can't afford) or an animal shelter- they might just end up putting it to sleep. I can definitely refer you to my vet since I live in LA county, but you're still gonna have to pay some money.
For future reference, you could look into pet insurance for a couple hundred dollars a year.
Good luck.

take the dog to a nearby SPCA. if the problems are resolvable, then they will take care of it. Chihuahuas are a popular breed of dog, especially in California. Chances are he'll get good home. This is a much better choice than letting the dog suffer. FYI- you should have thought out hte cost of having a pet BEFORE you got it. Research this sort of thing if you want to get another pet; you're pretty well off with getting a hampster or mouse.

I don't reside in Calif, but where I live, we have pet adoption places, one called " Wags " the other " Tags ", or you may try a pet rescue place in your area. I agree with you, if you don't have to put it down, don't. You could also go to your nearest pet supply store, ask them if they can give you info; on where to go, to get the dog adopted. Im a dog lover myself, I also own a Chihuahua. I truly hope I have been of some help.

Try what others suggested and get a local chihuahua rescue to take her. Or, make an ad on petfinder.com and list her as a special needs pet. Good luck!!
