The abs are a group of muscles in the core of your body, not just the muscles you see in a six-pack. They are the rectus abdominis (the thin sheet of muscle that starts at your rib cage and covers the front of the abdomen), the transverse abdominis (the thick core muscles located beneath the rectus abdominis) the erector spinae (the muscles in your back that line the spine and keep you upright) and the obliques (the muscles on the sides of your waist that allow you to twist from side to side).
Full sit ups force you to contract these muscles for a longer period of time, and engage a larger portion of abdominal muscles. They are best if you are trying to increase overall core strength. Crunches target a very small portion of the abdominal muscles - specifically the rectis abdominis. These are the specific muscles visible in the six pack. However, without a strong overall core, you will not likely achieve much by doing crunches alone. Crunches are best for those who are just beginning and don't have much core strength, or for those who already have very good core strength and want to accentuate the six pack look. Don't forget the obliques as well. These muscles keep your waist looking nice and trim.
Keep in mind that no amount of crunches or sit ups are going to give you a six pack if you have a layer of fat covering them. You need to work off any abdominal fat with cardio before you'll even be able to see them.

Actually both. Do them seperately in sets. For example, (2 sets of 15 crunches) and then (2 sets of 15 sit ups). Doing stuff in moderation rather than fast and just trying to get the job done is alot easier and better to reach your goal. Also, try doing crunches and situps and turn towards the love handles and work those too. By the way, it takes more than just sit ups and crunches to get a six pack. You need to do cardio and all that kinds of stuff. Eat healthier. Its alot of work. But good luck, im sure you can do it.

Crunches! Doing the entire situp just wastes energy, and does not increase muscle mass any more than a crunch.

Either is fine...what's important is to do them slowly and control your movements so you can really concentrate on the muscles. Make sure you alternate sets between each muscle group in your abs (ie: touch each knee with the opposing elbow so that you work each side).
You won't get a six-pack from ab work alone, though. You have to consume less calories than you burn in order to lose weight. Muscle definition will only show up when you lose fat over your entire body.

I heard that crunches are better. They produce less strain on the back and cause more frequent and tighter motions.
