If you want software to help, autocad is one of the most popular. The link below is of an autocad tutorial where there is an example of an isometric projection 1/2 way down the page:

The link below is for a free download (not autocad).

Good luck.

Given this medium it is almost impossible to explain but I will try

lets choose a rectangle to draw 4 x 2 x 1

Start with the bottom left - the FRONT view

here you will have a box that is 4 x 2

Now draw vertical lines UP the sheet from the corners to a point where you wish to drat the TOP view and draw a straight line that connects them

that is the front side of the top view ... draw in the rest of the 4 x 1 top view.

From the corners of the top view extend a line out to the right from each corner much the same way as you did for the front to top portion.

from the FRONT view draw lines out to the right from each of the corners (this will be two lines). At some point draw a line at a 45* angle across them. Where the angled line intersects the extended front lines, draw lines that go vertically.

Where these vertical lines cross the horizontal lines from the top view, you will create your SIDE view. It should measure 2 x 1. Exactly what you would see if you viewed your box from the side.

hope that helped a bit.....

That guy above did a great job explaining it but you probably need pictures, right? Try this:
