I'm as pro-gun as they get, but I've often wondered what purpose this weapon serves. It seems too bulky to conceal well, and perhaps a bit too large and heavy to maneuver well in a close to medium quarter gunfight.
I'm not sure if it's a terribly good hunting arm, either.
Anyone care to "weigh in" on its practicality?
I can't emphasize enough that I'm not trying to say, "no one should own, use or carry one" but I suspect that it's more for show and certain types of target practice than it is for self-defense and hunting.

Somebody just wanted something as powerful as the .357 Mag, .44 Mag, and now the .50 Action Express but in an automatic platform. Other experiments shooting .357 & .44 Mags out of auto-loaders were fair to dismal. The rim created a problem feeding out of a box magazine.

The forerunners of the present day behemoth Desert Eagles used a rimless .44 magnum loaded from rifle brass like the .308 & shortened .30-06. Now we have the .10mm (ballistically similiar to the old .41 Mag.), and the .357 Sig (ballistically similar to the .357 Mag.) which are a different approach to the same solution--a magnum caliber handgun in auto-loader format.

I agree that the Desert Eagle is too, too big for practical applications but if that is your cup of tea, then... More power to you!

If i ought to discover a DE that does no longer jam - definite. If i ought to discover a DE that did no longer crack it fairly is ejector after some bins of ammo - definite. on the grounds that it fairly isn't any longer a threat - then the respond is an spectacular enormous "NO" till you in addition to might count kind the load of the DE and it fairly is usefulness as a club. a private or domicile protective firearm needs to cycle 4 hundred+ rounds blunders unfastened previously you are able to believe it. call it a ruin in era for the two the pistol and proprietor. I incredibly have under no circumstances, ever, seen a DE proceed to exist on the firing line with out some kind of jam each 20 minutes. And the DE isn't the only pistol with this concern - this is person-friendly to easily approximately each and all of the enormous bore intense power automatics. You get one which will fireplace 4 hundred rounds touble unfastened - you're golden. As to too a lot power......... absolutely everyone ought to purchase a point III vest or extra effectual on Ebay. wish this helps

I have wondered this myself. The .44 mag has been used for revolver hunting for years, i would also imagine that the .50 AE would be similarly efficient in hunting. But as you have stated the Desert Eagle is such a large, heavy weapon that i would not think it would make a good hunting firearm. I could also imagine that it would be pretty rough to shoot. There is no chance of conceiling it, so it could not be used for conceiled carry, it is overkill for home defense, i think it is just somewhat of a show gun, to see how big a semi-auto they could make.

It's obviously a concept piece, just to show the possibility more than anything else. I know at least one little lady who loves to punch half-inch holes in paper with hers, but she also has an H&K in 45ACP for general carry and a 38Spl snubby for her fanny pack when jogging. The autocannon would require she jog with a wheelbarrow to carry the thing. On the positive side, she's so used to the half-bore that she's not going to flinch with the others.

You have to remember, the Desert Eagle was made by the Isreali's to be used in their military and that it's used as a military weapon, not as a self defence weapon like the Whalter PPK. So if anything it's a sport and "show" weapon, not a self defence weapon.

I know a Law Enforcement officer that is such a big man that he carries his in a inside the pants holster with no excessive bulk. This guy is like 6'6" and 325 pounds with huge hands.

Maybe it's just too large and heavy for you......LOL

I would guess show. Some may chose to sport shot with it but the $$$ and the recoil would get pretty old pretty quick. You could definitley hunt with it if your state allows. There are similar caliber handsguns that people hunt with all the time.

There's a reason it's called "The Desert Ego."

It's very much a show pistol, and very impractical for defense or hunting. But there's absolutely NOTHING wrong with that.

I don't own myself but maybe they fit into the same catagory as other seemingly impractical firearms, maybe they are just fun to shoot, anything wrong with that ?
