Chicken in the store container should be used within 30 days of freezing.
If you have sealed it in a freezer proof container then you have 3 months.
The only problem with leaving chicken or other meats in the freezer longer than (30 days or 3 mo) is freezer burn. If you take it out and there is freezer burn just cut it off and use the chicken.

Depending on the part of chicken depends on how long it can stay frozen. Anything from 3-12 months. (see source)
Though as others said leaving it frozen for too long can make it taste different.
Its all up to personal taste, even though it is still safe to eat.
Also check your freezers hand book.

The rule of thumb is 6 months until freezer burn sets in but its still good. I have beef from my cow in my freezer thats over a year thats still good. But its in a deep freezer. a refrigerator freezer is no where near as cold but 6 month should still be ok. Smell it when you thaw it out. It shouldn't ie go bad just get freezer burnt nad taste like crap.

We've eaten 1 year-old (probably older than that) freezer chicken (whole fryer) before, and it wasn't bad.

Alot of people say chicken can stay frozen for up to a year and still be okay.
I find that if I keep chicken frozen for anything over 3 months then it starts to get freezer burnt. So, use 3 months max as a good rule.

After about 6 months it is no longer at it's best, but it is still fine for an indefinite period, just not "best"
