You keep asking these questions about the nature of humankind...

The answer is that human beings are inherently selfish creatures. We want what we want, even when we know its wrong. Some people care enough about the people that we love that we don't generally follow up on our own primitive instincts, but we're still basically ruled by them.

Every single one of us have a need for three things. Food, water, and shelter. Second to that is sex to pass on our genes to the next generation. By that, land, plants, other animals, and places to shelter from the elements are also tied into it. And, to get those things in this day and age, we need to have things like jobs to pay for what we need.

But it all comes down to the most base of instincts.

Every single thing we do can be traced back to those things. Its why we hurt each other.

And every single one of those is based on what "I" (rhetorical "I" meaning individual person) want and what "I need.

Society has evolved where we are beginning to put an emphasis on the social element but theres a reason why people so much care only what "I" want and need. Because its human instinct to do so in order to preserve themselves, and the things that will keep themselves all right in the world.

We are still animals. Animals that have opposable thumbs, higher brain functions, and a real language, but animals and that animal inside us will always rule.

To the point of survival it is individualistic, however we are social beings we cannot survive without one another.

Good question.
Its highly individualistic, though our needs are based on humankind.

Both. We are created as individuals, but in order to survive we must live as a community.
