Like other animals, we do our best to survive. But we need each other in order to do so. This makes us mix in altruism, which is in our own best interest!

There is variation within the population. It ranges from the likes of Mother Theresa to sociopaths. Society relies on a semi-altruism that favors "us" over "them". I do not want to sound wishy-washy by saying "the middle", but as there is no way to quantify altruism, to say how far from the middle it is.

A balance of both, as it should be. Survival instinct protects the self and also the instinct to help others in the clan so they can all survive.
