Criticism, negativity, only seeing the bad in everybody and everything, holding on to the wrong or disappointments that caused the bitterness to take root and grow, unkind words, suspicion about everyone's motives behind their good intentions,blame, anger and pain.

A general unhappiness with one's life and others. Not to be confused with depression. Bitterness is as its name implies, a bitter attitude toward the world. Not a good word to say about anything. YBIC

Lack of forgiveness is what causes the root of bitterness to take hold.
Some of the symptoms...anger, depression, sadness and lots of sarcasm...

displaced anger, jealousy, gossip, grudge holding, even right down to no humor. There have got to be a ton of other red flags besides these. Sometimes you can tell it just in the face itself.

Anger, at yourself and others. Hatred, of yourself and others. Seclusion, loneliness, depression. Unable to function on a day to day basis. Self-ridicule, self-doubt, low self-esteem. The symptoms go on and on.

Eating things nobody else would eat like pickles, lemons, dark chocolate with no sugar, drinking bland coffee or bland tea. (it depends on what you mean by this - frankly i like being a smart @$$)
