it is unlawful to give or dowry in india, you can go behind bars if it is reported to the police. The marraige expenses are normally [amongst some hindu's] on the bride's family. If the man is confident of himself then he should not ask for dowry or sell himself. the girl comes to a new family and they might gift the girl with some jewels, things needed for new life etc but cash and other extravagent items should be avoided. If the child [girl] is the only child or daughter the family may do things out of their own affection for the child and not because of pressure from the boy's side - I know that dowry is a persistent evil in India

Yes, it still occurs in some areas of India. And although the dowry system does not remain in many upscale and mainstream societies, boys are still considered to be prized. Believe me, if you take a son away from their family, that daughter in law doesn't have to give a dowry due to the outdated system, but she has to pay in many other ways.

One may think that I'm in favour of Dowry system which is not true! But traditionally in India or anywhere in the world, the wealth was always inherited by Son especially the elder one! Somewhere the system of Gaining the bridal rights in the ancestral wealth originated in the form of Money / Jewellaries handed over to the bride by the parents. This was distorted by in- laws & Husband in the form of Dowry! If one sees in right perspective, The Bridegroom is for sale, not the bride! In certain communities of India the custom is that parents of the Groom & Bride, pay for the entire home for the couple to start the newly married life!it's not that always it is demanded, but usually this amount is usually discussed & fixed by Parents of the Couple!

Parents think daughters of more worth hence get them married even by taking loans or selling/mortgaging their ancestral/own houses, for the dowry. Few marriages are performed without dowry, but in all it is must. Boys & their families fix alliance based on dowry and not basing the bride. Despite stern Govt. anti dowry laws, it is continuing. Matrimonial criminal cases are very big sources of bribe to officials.

The govt. has banned this dowry system, but still it persists. It is not that parents think their daughters are worthless, but they want to give their best to their daughters, a happy and long married life. But this weakness is exploited by the boys and their parents, and they make a business of it, and greed takes over, and they demand more and more.

First of all let me clear you brides parents don't offer dowry because they feel that their daughters are a burden. Won't a guys parents give him anything on their behalf if he is to move out of their home for permanent? brides parents actually gift their daughters. As it is daughters don't share any right in ther property of her parents after marraige. So what's wrong if they they impart some of their earnings to her at the time of marraige? Although there was a time when these gifts towards to daughter bacamoe a source of greed for the grooms side, but the time has lap\sed the way it came. NOw-a-days the girls are very particular about their parents offerings and plenty of them don't even share those belongings with their in-laws. Some are so possessive about these belongings that they wouldn't even lend them...

Your definition to Dowery System is wrong. Dowery System is dated 5000 years old. You can read" Sri Ramcharit manas"
The Dowry means Gifts Given to Daughter as per ones Financial Status , but now "People have started asking for it " that is bad.

Who says Daughters are worthless ? Daughters are Precious. They are the only one to take care of Parents even after their Marriage. Daughters are the one , they never hurt their Parents.

You should understand the real meaning of the Dowry. As after the Marriage the Girls do not exercise the right on Parents Property, in spite of having the legal status to do that, Hence Parents give some Gifts to start the New Life.

She is so much love her parents that She even do not ask for it, but consider Her rights which he gets as a family member in her Husbands house, as her Financial Status increases after Marriage with the so called Dowry & the legal rights She get in Her "in Laws" Property.

This is Win Win Situation for them , to consolidate on this Position ,She needs to win the heart of her in Laws only , by just giving them respects, as She must understand that Her Husband is first the Son/ Brother of" in Laws"
.
Now after Getting adjusted in the New Family , why she is worthless?// She becomes assets.

Cheer up !!

I wish to add just these few lines to what 'wizard of the east' has said. To be fair to the boy’s side we have to consider that very often it is a result of a vicious circle. The boy’s parents make huge dowry at the time of getting their daughters married so they feel it is their birthright to get dowry when their son gets married. The govt. has banned it now it is up to the youth of our country to force it …SAY NO TO DOWRY!!!

It is tradition bound.

In olden days men alone were considered as bread winners and treated as head of the families, providing financial ,emotional, mental and social securities.

Now-a-days, girls are getting educated ,employed, financially becoming independent an boys and their parents are no longer in a position to argue their case in favour o dowry.

Now-a-days boy and girl are equal in education, employment etc and it is time dowry is shown the door from the hall of marriage.
If only girls and their parents unite(form an association ? anti dowry marriage sociery?)
Dowry can be abolished.
It is already happening among the educated masses.

ok. done. we do away with the dowry system. The girls inherit with property now -a-days. but it persists bec. the parents want to catch a good boy with fat salary. so like corruption in every sphere, on social scene too, the corruption prevails. There is scampering for IAS boys. and the parents of girls with bag full of cash, from 25 lacs onwards rush to participate in the rat race. so if they are ready to give, why not take? No it is not the boys parents who are at fault, the girl's side is equally at fault. stop this bribing. say No, to boys who want dowry. then the whole system will come crashing down.
