It is a liturgical symbol, reminding us of our mortality. Some people treat it as a tool for witnessing their faith to others. Others would prefer to keep their faith to themselves. Either attitude is fine.
The ashes will remain until they are brushed off or washed off. When that happens is up to you. People generally wash their faces before going to bed. If you wash the ashes off earlier and feel guilty about it, ask yourself why. It might provoke an insight that will change your attitude about your faith. (Less embarrassment, more witness or less guilt?) (Many Catholics have similar spiritual conflicts over saying grace over restaurant meals. That darned Sign of the Cross!)
