I'm joining the Marine Reserve next month and have a question. I know that I will be making money while I'm training. Will that money be deposited into my checking account back home? If so how soon will that begin? Does it start as soon as the first pay period comes around in my training? Or does it not happen until I graduate? What I'm really wondering is, will my girlfriend be able to take that money out and use it to pay bills while I'm away?

You will be given instruction as to your options during your processing period, which will occur at the beginning of your time on "The Island". Good luck, maggot!

All Marine recruits are required to set up an account at the training depot and deposit your pay into that account. You will be required to buy a whole lot of stuff out of your own pocket when you get there. After the first month, you will have very little left to send home. Basically, your gf will NOT be able to count on getting much money from you until you are done with boot camp and MCT. You really need to talk to your recruiter.

If shes on your account she will and Mine started after 30 days or the second pay period. The military changed from a 30 day pay period to a 15 or twice a month pay period. Make sure you have your account number, routing info and bank address when you leave for boot camp. If not you will get paid in boot camp by check and you'll have to endorse it and send it to her which is dangerous. Your also able to buy a money order after you cash your check and then you'll be able to mail it to her. Anyway you look at it it will take at least 30 days best case scenerio

Once you join they will ask you for your banking info. probably in the form of a voided check. Once they have that you will be put on direct deposit like 99% of the military and money will go into your account like clockwork twice a month. By the time you ship to boot camp your checks will be going into your account.

Every time you get paid they will give you an oppertunity to take care of bills that you have to pay. Some advice for you, most banks have automatic bill pay and you can set it up to pay regularly occuring bills like car payments, credit cards and so on. Or if your girlfriend is gonna be the one responsible for paying your bills than you can A. give her access to your bank account. If you trust her and you know she will do right by you than do it. Or B. which is what I recommend. You can have a seperate account that you both have access to and you can have a portion of your pay from each check be automatically transferred to that account. I have it set up that x amount of dollars go into my third account automatically and my mom has access to it for bills and so forth. This way always leave you with some control and if God forbid things don't got the way you want while you are gone than you wont be left hanging to dry!

I hope this helps and good luck!

Unless things have changed when I went to boot camp the military will pay you a partial pay for necessary things like toothpaste, deodorant, etc. They will hold the rest until graduation, You will be able to set up allotments for you home bank toward the last 10 days of boot camp for the first payday after boot. This way you have a fairly substantial chunk of money for your first leave.

No you have to take all the money and party.

Just kidding....the paymaster will send the money where ever you want. Most folks seem to prefer 25% for them and the rest sent back home to the joint account you have with your girlfriend.

Good luck in boot camp

takes about 6-8 weeks before your first paycheck hits the account. It will direct deposited into an account that you designate, so make sure you GF has access to that account, assuming you trust her enough to not run off will all of your money.

Additionally, the first paycheck will be miniscule, as you will have to pay for all your uniforms and stuff first.

Your best bet is to contact all of your creditors before you ship and arrange to skip paymnets or forgive late fees.

This is a question that has the answer of "it all depends." The Marine Corps is a big machine basically and you and all the other recruits take a while to process in. The first few weeks of boot camp are spent getting all of your paperwork, including a direct deposit account setup for your pay to go to. How fast all this paperwork processing depends on a million factors. You will need to bring a deposit slip with you to boot camp for your current checking account that you want your pay to go into since you already have an account open. A lot of new recruits are 17 or 18 and have never had a checking account before so the Marines will have banks and credit unions like Navy Federal Credit Union there to help you open up a new account. SInce you already have an account you will be asked to fill out the paperwork with your existing account number information. Once that paperwork is done a human being gets involved and enters your account information into the system so when you do get paid you will get your pay into the account you want it to go to. Yes, you do get paid, based on your paygrade, while you are in boot camp. Remember or know if you do not already know that you buy all of your uniforms and gear that is issued to you those first few days of boot camp. So, yes you do get paid, but the Marines will get their money for your uniforms and other supplies from those first pay checks. You will get paid on the 1st and the 15th of each month starting when your paperwork has processed and after you pay the Marines back for all the stuff you need to be a Marine. SO, that is why it depends. Another factor is when you go to boot camp. If you go when all the kids get out of high school, that is considered surge time and there are thousands of new recruits at boot camp with you and only so many people to process all the paperwork. They will go as fast as possible with this paperwork, but there is A LOT of paperwork to take care of, not just where your pay is going to get deposited. There are other things like life insurance forms, emergency contact forms, your choices for where you want to be stationed, school paperwork for after boot camp if you have a job that has a school. Basically, lots of stuff going on as you can see. Set things up with your parents or your girlfriend or whomever to maybe get a loan from them before you go to ensure your bills will get paid on time while you are in boot camp just in case your pay doesn't show up as fast as you need it or in the amount you were expecting since you will be deducted for your uniforms. Arrange to pay them back ASAP when you do see your pay come into your account. Also, your GI Bill money will be subtracted at $100 a month for one year. This is another thing you need to account for in your pay. Don't worry though. All first year military people are poor for the first year. It takes a person who has the ability to live on a strict budget to fare well. Don't go crazy after boot camp and spend all of the money that is in your account. It can seem like a lot of money because a lot of times you will get one big depostit for $3K-$4k all at once. SAVE YOUR MONEY. You will be surprised how rich you can become compared to your friends that blow all their pay as soon as they get it. Listen to the smart senior ranking people that will come into your life. Don't listen to the fool E5's that drive around in $45K cars. They can't afford it and neither can you. It is amazing what you will see when it comes to money in the military. Be different, manage your money smartly and you will be better off than 99% of your fellow Marines.

You get paid for the work you did the next month. You start in July your first pay is in Aug. And DOD pay is direct diposted to which ever bank account you wish. Be careful about letting anyone handle your pay, to many service members get robbed blind by their loved ones and they can not get the money back because they gave the family members/friends access to their account.
