Depending on the states you worked in and the amount of income earned in each location you may or may not be required to file a state tax return.

You will need to file only one federal return and maybe two part-year state returns. It all depends on the income.

It varies from state to state. Did you actually live in two different states or just work in two different states? If you lived in two different states, you probably would have to file a part year return for both states. Some states have agreements with border states that say that you only owe taxes in the state where you live, even if you worked in the other state. Some do not. You would need to check with each state's Department of Taxation and see what they require.

You probably will have to file a return with the state you live in (if your state has an income tax) and any state that had taxes withheld.

And a tip, if you go to the state's website, do a search for 'Department of Taxation', do not try to find the 'Internal Revenus Service', 'IRS', or 'state IRS'. States generally do not call their taxation departments 'IRS' as the federal government does.

It depends on state law, so check their websites, but you probably have to file in both states.
