My 19 year-old sister was recently kicked out of my house because she couldn't keep up with her bills and was constantly into trouble. Now she has my husband's car because he agreed that she could use it as long as she pays the car insurance for it. The problem, you ask? She only wants to pay for half of it because he has been in to accidents over the past 5 years. We're only asking for $115. I only pay 88 for my car, so why should she determine how much she pays if we're being this generous to her? Everytime I broach the subject, she goes balistic. As if I have any right to the subject. To make matters worse, my husband is deployed and cannot deal with the issue directly. Only through me. He says that if she can't pay the car insurance, then get the car back. But she refuses to do so. What do I do?

If she refuses to give the car back to you, you have no choice but to call the police on her. Especially if your husband's name is on the title. About the car insurance explain to her that she needs to pay the entire amount because she is the one driving the car not you or your husband. If she refuses take the car away from her. You have every right to bring up the subject because it affects you as well. Like you said your husband is deployed so he can't deal with the issue. Good Luck.

She shouldn't determine anything. All you have to do is take the keys away from her, and let her walk for a little while. Then she will understand how important it is to pay the bills on time.

She is taking advantage of you, and she knows that if your husband was home, she wouldn't get away with it. Just tell your sister to park the car since she can't pay the insurance on it, because if she wrecks it, you are screwed and obviously she can't afford to pay any damages.

Tell her what the car is worth, and that if she's not willing to go with your previous agreement, then you'll be sending her a bill for the price of the car. Either she gets to stick with the agreement, or buy the car from you. If she doesn't agree to either, then get the car back. Take the keys, get it towed from her place, etc. Next time you make an agreement like that with a family member, write up a contract and get a lawyer or someone to notarize it, etc. That way if she takes off with the car, or doesn't make payments, etc., then she's in legal trouble, and you still have a car.

Tell her you are taking the car.ASAP if she does no agree to pay the insurance. Then tell her you will call the police if she does not return the car. Hopefully she then gives it back. If not TRY to follow through on the threat. It will only help her to set boundaries and teach her to grow up. That is what you are trying to do by kicking her out of the house. She has to grow up. Life is hard.

I hate to sound mean, but if she don't want to give you the car back and it was only a verbal contract, then I would call the law, or like to repo man, get an extra set of keys made and take it back

You give her the price and you tell her that what it is!!!!! if she can't pay it tell her to get a job! People that take advantage of others will never learn and they will keep doing it. Take care of it now cause she shouldnt drive for free.
