Tape.

If you ever have a chance to take up the Sweet Science, you will learn very quickly that wearing just gloves when sparring is the quick way to get your wrists sprained and your knuckles bloody.

They put layers of tape (it is usually the the white gauze tape, which gives it that "cloth" look) around their knuckles and wrists to prevent these injuries.

Today, most trainers do not allow boxers to train and spar without hand/wrist wraps and gloves. Handwraps are used to secure the bones in the hand, and the gloves are used to protect the hands from blunt injury, allowing boxers to throw punches with more force than if they did not utilize them.

IT'S CALLED GAUZES AND IT TO PROTECT THE FIGHTER FROM BREAKING HIS HANDS AND KNUCKLES IN TRAINING YOU USE HAND WRAPS BUT IN A ACTUAL FIGHT YOU USE GAUZE BECAUSE THEY'RE BETTER TO PROTECT THE HAND. THE SAME THING YOU GET FROM THE DR. TO BANDAGE A WOUND.
