what about pancakes? if there not made in a pan are they still concidered pancakes?

A pound cake is so called because it uses a pound of eggs, a pound of flour and a pound of sugar. It's total weight is more than a pound.

As for pancakes... If they're made on a griddle, they're called griddlecakes, and the breakfast-makers society assures me that if you were to make them in a pot they would not scold you for calling them potcakes...

Pound cake is referred to as "pound cake" because traditional recipes call for 1 lb. of butter!
