My neighbours 2 boxers never shut up they bark constantly and its really driving me insane, i just dont think I can put up with it much longer, they allow them to bark and dont try to stop it, im too much of a chicken to say anything to them i'd be afraid incase they told me to f off or something, I dont really want to go down the route of reporting them to environmental health but I just dont know what else to do, I have spoke to some of my other neighbours and they cant stand it either, its just constant bloody barking from about 11am to about 6pm

Please dont tell me to confront my neighbour as I really cant do it

I would get some constipation medicine and put it in some doggy treats, when you neighbors let their dogs out before they go to work drop a couple of treats out in the yard and then wait...when the neighbors come home their dogs will have dropped landmines all over their house. Just a little pay back

I went through this. I talked to the police and animal control and researched it on the net.

First of all it takes a bit of patience and you have to take certain steps. The basic thing is everyone in the neighborhood have to work together. Someone should speak with them, if not you someone else. If they want to get violent or threaten you be able to report it. Even threatening is reportable and it will be logged that the police came.

When they are barking call animal control. They won't use your name when they go. This will be logged by them as well. Another time another neighbor needs to call, creating another report. Eventually you will have evidence.

Write down when and what times the dogs are barking as this is valid evidence. Video tape the dogs barking if you can. You can go down to the courthouse and swear out a complaint without any of the evidence.

I did some of this as it carried on for a very long time and the people were not even apologetic or even try to fake it. Ultimately what happened was I found out that they were renting and the dates and times of the reports were forwarded to the landlord. The people just moved.

Another thing that helped was that they also had people over all of the time, day and night. Cops put houses on a watch list because this could mean drugs. I knew a cop and as the cops would patrol they would swing buy that house all of the time.

But again the best thing to do is have someone call animal control and privide names of all of the neighbors who are willing to back this up. It might sound like I was being the neighbor from hell enough was enough.

To be honest if no one tells them there is a problem they may not know there is one. Someone should first tell them there is a problem, if your too chicken or too shy you need to get some one to do it. Have they ever acted in unfriendly manner to you? think about what if you were doing something they didnt like do you think they would hesitate to come tell you the problem? Alot of problems can be solved so quickly by just letting that person know there is a problem. Most people would rather do something about it themselves then get a visit by police and by officers. BELIEVE ME I KNOW!!! I was an animal control officer for 9 years. 75% of the people i had to talk to said, the same darn thing every time, "why didnt anyone say anything to me" generally about 50% of those cases, were resolved in a week and only a few were on going problems. I wont TELL you to confront them because going to someone in a bad mood only gets everyone involved angry. You need to approach it with a clear mind. Get a friend or a neighbor to approach them. Then call police, but only call when the dogs are barking and they are not in danger of doing the "shut up" when the cops are there. Call animal enforcement if you are at your wits end. Thats what they are there for stop hiding and being miserable and do something about it. You will make everyone around you happy. By the way do you have a street of wimpy babies? Why isnt anyone doing anything about it if everyone hates it?

Aw we are having the same problem, its driving us insane too, we actually did have a word with our neighbour and she was adamant the dog only barks when she leaving or coming home..(shes one of those people that its her way or the highway)failing that we did go to the Environmental heath and they said there wasn't much they could do if the dog is being left for less than 11 hours which is a joke dont you think? Our neighbour isnt very approachable but we do normally get on with her fine if we tend to agree with what shes says lol.Its so aqwuid as its not good to start off arguements, we have been debating writing a friendly letter to her telling her of our distress, maybe you could try that aswell? Failing that maybe your landlord or council could be contacted by one of your other neighbours if you have a word, personaly i love dogs and wouldnt have one only to leave it at home all day.. I sympathise with you..

Blame the neighbour not the dog is the first thing. Then report them to the council or the Environmental Health Department. They don't have to be a council tenant to have a complaint made about them for noise. Next door used to have a little dog that barked continuously all day, it used to p*** people off in the next street it was that bad, and they never once told it to shut up until one day I got pig-sick of it and shouted "FOR GOD'S SAKE SHUT UP", and that improved the situation. It wasn't perfect, but better. And the dog would get hysterical about nothing and she eventually gave herself a heart attack, but even then they let her carry on! Some people shouldn't have dogs.

Well not much you can do through a fence, I'd go to her and ask her if there's a possibility of having the dog quiet and indoors by 8pm so your baby can sleep. In my experiences people who leave their dogs outside barking all day normally aren't very aware of their surroundings and bringing up the issue with her may help. If not then learn the dogs name, and talk to him when your outside, tell him hes a good boy and tell him no barks when he does, he may not respond to you too well at the beginning but the more you socialize with him the more he should respond to you. Forgot to mention, in canada i know there is a bylaw against any dog who barks for more than 15 min straight. If the owner gets 3 complaints they will be fined for it, the first 2 they are contacted and notified that if they do not cease and desist they will be charged.

If you can not talk to the neighbours then a letter is needed. You could do it anynomsly if needed stating that the dogs barking is excessive at times and how you feel etc... Prehaps your neighbours do not realise that the barking is upsetting anyone as nobody has confronted them about it. Are they at home with the dogs and let them bark? Do they know how to control them? Another way is to get to know them on friendly terms, go round for coffee etc... and prehaps mention the barking if it happens whilst you are there ie- gosh they are loud, do they bark like that all the time etc.... you never know they might surprise you.

My dogs were reported to Animal Control for the same thing. The head of animal control came out to investigate the complaint. She inspected my yard and while she was there she checked out my grooming shop for my yearly license.

We walked around the yard with the dogs and talked a bit and her finial conculsion was that, "Dogs bark, that is what they do" My dogs are trained fence dogs and bark when people walk down the street, they bark when a stray dog is wondering the streets, they bark and howl when they hear a siren or the train whistle., they announce the mail man. So my dogs bark for reasons and not to just hear them selves bark.

I did not get a citation because my dogs were doing nothing but what dogs do.

There are things the owners could do to stop the excessive barking but you probably wouldn't be able to get them to do anything about it.

I was reported 3 different times but never got a citation.

You might want to check out the rules and regulations for your state, county or city. But keep in mind that state rules over County & City.

You need to report them to your local authority , they are the ones to deal with this , i am sure this comes under nuisance neighbours , or you could give environmental health a phone and see what they say .. You can remain anonymous when you do this and they aren`t allowed to say who reported them .. I was in a similar situation a while back , my neighbour kept their 3 dogs in the back garden whilst they were at aork and these dogs barked all day , probably boredom but thank goodness someone else reported them first ..

Good Luck

Call the police and apologize for calling for such a minor matter but they are disturbing the peace. Do this like 9 or 10 at night. when the cops show up, of course the dogs will bark like crazy cuz that's what they do. They should write a citation to the owners. Keep doing this once a week, and get other neighbors to call them too.

Video tape the dogs barking and being obnoxious, and then call the non emergency police line. It it is after 11:00 pm they are violating the law with making excessive noise.

If the police ask you to confront your neighbour, let them know you are concerned they will get violent.

edit: I read that you posted the noise is only during the day. I'm not sure the police will do anything as their is no crime being commited. Try getting another neighbour to confront them.
