I have a couple of suggestions:
First, you need to know what kind of living situation your dog will be in. Are you in a house with a large yard where your dog can run or do you you have an apartment or small yard? Will you be able to walk your dog every day or every so often? Does the place where you live have weight limits or any restrictions on dogs? Do you have children?
I would take a lot of time to think about the situation before you purchase a dog. For instance, I really want a bigger dog, but I live in a small apartment with no place for the dog to run around so at this time it's not an option. Instead I bought a small dog, a rat terrier, and he's great. He has a lot of energy so I walk him every day, but he's perfect for my life right now.
I would also suggest adopting a dog, it's a really great thing and they are always looking for good homes! :)
Hope this helps!

A Boxer. They are the best dogs ever.
Seriously, though, you need to match up your energy level and personality to a specific dog breed. Example 1: you are a couch potato, and you consider running a form of extreme torture. You should get a bulldog. Example 2: You are a tri-athlete who wakes up at 4 and runs until the sun comes up, your body is sleek and muscular and runs like a well-oiled machine....well, then a weimaraner is the doggie for you. Get it? I think there are quizzes online too that can help you figure out which breed is good for you. Good luck on your search!

If you're bent on getting a purebred dog, then I would recommend taking a breed selector quiz to get a few ideas on what breeds might suit your lifestyle the best.
But if you don't have to have a purebred, then I would recommend going to your local animal shelter. The staff will be able to help you find a dog that matches your lifestyle, needs, and wants. There are lots of homeless dogs out there that make excellent pets, given a chance.

It all really depends on your lifestyle and dog experience. Some dog breeds are tougher than others to handle and are not for inexperienced dog owners. I have had tons of different breeds and although I loved each dog I never fell in love with a breed until I got Labs. They are the best. They also fit my lifestyle. I take mine swimming in the summer as well as hiking and camping. In the winter I take them sledding and snowmobling. They are extremely intelligent so they are very easy to train. They are versatile, loyal, dedicated, loving and affectionate. They are very friendly and out going and get along with kids and other dogs.

you need to think about how active you are and where you live. look for breeds that do well withthe space you have to offer as well as has an energy level that fits your own. then do research on the dog breeds that strike your interest. call the breed club and talk to some one there about the dog you are thinking of getting. They can recommend breeds to you that take care of there animals, rather than the puppy mills. But keep in mind that mix breed dogs can carry treats of all the breeds. So don't count them out.

Purchasing a dog from a pet store is a bad idea. Please do some research :

Rescuing a dog from a shelter is a great idea. Again, do your homework so that you're aware of the needs of different breeds of dogs. For example, a Border Collie is a great dog, but is definitely not the breed for everyone.
You can adopt a dog and do a search by breed here:

People are going to suggest all kinds of pure breds...but, my experience has been that mutts from a shelter are the most affectionate, loving pups around. I found my current dog during a rainstorm in the parking lot of a low-life bar. She is absolutely the smartest sweetest dog I've ever know - learns new "tricks" as soon as we take the time to teach her.

Don't buy, adopt. The dogs from the pound are the best dogs in the world. They need a home and are SO often great. Pick a cool one; it'll be like getting a bargain and people will be jealous.

Depends on your need....if you want a guard dog..then a German Shepherd or a dobberman is ok. If you want a family dog then you should definitely have a golden retriever or a labrador. If you want a smaller one you should go in for a Cocker Spaniel...they are the cutest. But the best are the street dogs....they are smart, intelligent, loyal, loving and you will provide a home for him and he will bless you and so will I ! haha Happy hunting !
