seriously, my dog poops more than any dog i've ever known. i feed him iams, so it can't be due to poor quality dog food. in the span of about a 45 minute walk, he will poop at least three times. i've known dogs his age (he's 1 yr old) and younger that poop once, maybe twice, a day. my vet says as long as it's not diarrhea (sp?), he should be fine. any ideas from anyone with similar experience?

Just because a food is higher quality (though I would put Iams in the "average quality" column) doesn't mean it's right for your dog and his digestive system. I have one friend who swears by Solid Gold, but it caused loose stool in another friend's dog. You might consider trying a different food to see how he reacts to it.

Also make sure you are not over-feeding him. Most food companies will tell you to feed more than your dog actually needs - they sell more that way. They also give a general range, not considering individual dog's needs. The web sites below can help you figure out about how many calories a day your dog needs. Then check the package to see how many calories are in a cup, then do the math from there.

my puppy goes about 5-6 times a day. Sometimes he goes once then 10 minutes later he goes again. I do not think that I over feed him or anything. My puppy is also eating IAMS mixed with cesar wet food.
Is your dog small? my puppy is only 5lbs and I don't think he can hold it for a long time. I also noticed that his "pile" is way smaller than other dog's "pile."
maybe you can crate train him to train him to hold it for a longer time?
Good luck

Actually,IAMS is a low quality kibble. It does sound as if you may be overfeeding. i would switch to a higher quality kibble with more meat content and less corn and fillers and use the feeding guidelines that come with the food. Good luck!
