on top of that, I would be gratefull to have an estimate of its current use in schools, whether mandatory or not. Please keep in mind that I'm not a US-Citizen, so don't assume I know anything about it ! Thanx in advance...

Actually, I don't think the pledge is mandatory anymore. If a student does not want to recite it then the student does not have to recite it. This is not just because of the religious line in the pledge but also because it is viewed at a violation of the freedom of expression.

well i think it should be said in all schools. If you feel that if some other country is better, or if they dont understand what the pledge means they need to do their homework. I dont know why its a big deal not to say it? If you dont have faith in your country try living in another one?

Should be all, children need to know about patriotic duties, and "pledge" the loyalty to this country if they are reaping the benefits of being educated here for FREE!
