According to Revelation 3:14-22, the Church is currently in the "Age of Laodicea." Jesus describes this Church as being preoccupied with wealth, comfort and position instead of with Him (doesn't this sound familiar?). In fact, He stated He's OUTSIDE this Church, begging each believer to let Him in (v. 20). The present Church age is that of the apostasy.
Consider the fact there are individual denominations that teach these doctrines:
1) Jesus isn't God, He's the incarnate Angel Michael;
2) Adam is God;
3) Jesus was married;
4) Gentile Christians replaced Jews as God's chosen people;
5) Gay marriage is Scripturally supported;
6) Actively gay clergy is Scripturally supported....
etc.
THIS is apostacy, without a doubt. Whenever the Body of Christ -- individually OR corporately -- advocates turning away from beliefs that are taught in the Bible, it errs into apostacy.

Apostasy means abandoning the faith or what you once believed. When we use the word "church" we must include all Christian churches.
If you look at the Catholic church and its history, one can say that it has been an apostate church since its early days. Even now, their public protection of pedophile priest is obvious apostasy.
The Episcopals today are fighting over whether or not they should stay together if some want to ordain and accept homosexuals or not. Scripture is clear on this subject-it is an abomination. So, if they split-then one group will lose the land and buildings and any other property. The fight becomes whether or not they should be true to God or keep the money. They will abandon their faith in God before they lose a building, or the tithes it takes in. This is apostasy.
The Pentecostals/Charismatics will restore people like Ted Haggard, Jim Baker, Jimmy Swaggart to the pulpit to lead the people. Sexual and financial scandals are just swept under the rug in order to keep the money flowing. This is apostasy.
There are few Christian churches left who are still seeking to serve God with a pure heart. Of the few left are the Amish, Mennonite, Baptist (about 5 groups), Bible Church, Presbyterian, Calvary Chapel, and a few Independents.

The apostasy in churches is evident.
No longer is the Gospel presented faithfully. Programs have replaced expository preaching. Purpose-Driven has replaced Gospel.
There is a movement right now that is embracing a return to Rome. Although considered Protestant, you go in some of these churches, and you wonder if they mislabeled the church. Icons, candles, statues, etc., are present.
The congregation is given therapy instead of biblical confrontation. People compartmentalize their lives, where there is a "secular life" in this compartment, and a "spiritual life" over here. The two don't cross over, and the church goer is able to live confidently like hell all week, and then are spiritual at church. Even the recent Ted Haggard scandal is indicative of this, and he was in leadership.
Paul wrote to Timothy about this, and we see it coming to pass. As it is written: "For the time will come when people will not put up with healthy doctrine but with itching ears will surround themselves with teachers who cater to their own needs. They will refuse to listen to the truth and will turn to myths." (II Timothy 4:3-4)

After the death of the Apostles, an apostasy set into the congregations and there was a falling away from the truth, ravenous wolves in sheep's clothing slipped into the congregations and led captives off after themselves seeking glory for themselves. The Apostles warned of it's coming. The apostasy would last until the last days where then the truth would be re-revealed, God would re=establish his truth. So any churches that arose during the apostasy would be apostate, this includes the Catholic Church and all the religions that broke away from here during the reformation and any other churches that formed as well, the last days started where God would bring back the truth started when Christ Jesus was enthroned in heaven which happened just after the start of the 20th century starting with World War 1, that is when Satan and his demons were cast out of heaven, down to the vicinity of the earth and was a turning point in earth's history. Never did such a period ever exist in human history to match what is going on in the world now.

Apostasy is the formal renunciation of ones religion. The term refers to renunciation and criticizing ones former religion. An old, narrow definition of this term refers to baptized Christians who leave their faith. ...
Actually - this is a rather complicated question - and a good one.
There are hundreds of thousands of churches who are experiencing this and for many reasons. People in our western culture for the most part are choosing to abandon their religious roots for a more secular worship of material things, or love, or evolution or many other things.
Many however, are leaving their church or religion of birth to pursue another religion. For example, you may have been raised Presbyterian, and decide that you want to explore a more current Christian lifestyle such as evangelical. You would not necessarily be an Apostate, but your Presbyterian pastor may think so.
Many churches are trying to adapt to social mores in order to keep their current congregants happy - for example many churches are now preaching the blending of evolution and creation. This however - will only cause problems in the long run for them. The time is coming when organized religion in and of itself will cease to exist.

There is a level of Liberalism creeping into some of the Churches. This is evident with the gay clergy thing and the women clergy thing and the nod to abortions and euthanasia and also embryonic stem cell research along with gay marriage. There is an orthodox element in all the Churches I think that will come together back under the Pope which is already happening. The other ones are lost I am afraid.

Apostasy means to fall away from the truth. Therefore, an apostate is someone who has once believed and then rejected the truth of God. Apostasy is a rebellion against God because it is a rebellion against truth. In the Old Testament God warned the Jewish people about their idolatry and their lack of trust in Him. In the New Testament the epistles warn us about not falling away from the truth. Apostasy is a very real and dangerous threat. Just remember, knowing the Bible is one thing, knowing the author is another.

The term "apostasy" is used to describe a false or "apostate" religion. A church that is said to be "in apostasy" is said to be steeped more and more in things that cannot be proven through the Word of God.

To allow things to be said and accepted in the church to keep you going there. Even though whatever it is, is not in the Bible.
Or whatever it is, is spoken against in the Bible.
The falling away from the Bible.
Apostasy is the falling away from the truth.
By the way this has to happen.
