Dogs, like humans, have a built-in personality. If they are spayed/neutered at a young age, they may tend to be less aggressive, but it is not a given. It depends on their upbringing and environment.
Also, any animal can be overweight, altered or not. Some breeders and vets believe that the horomones generated by the sex organs (ovaries and testicles) cause animals to be more active, and therefore thinner. I have seen many intact dogs that are too fat or too thin. The key is diet and exercise, just as in humans. If you overfeed your dog, or give too many treats, he's going to get fat. If you feed a good maintenance diet with the occasional treat, and give him lots of exercise, he's going to maintain a healthy weight.
The benefits of altering your dog are health related. Spaying your female will eliminate the chance of pyometra, or infection in the uterus, and substantially cut the risk of mammary tumours. When you neuter a dog, you lower the risk of testicular cancer and prostate problems. Altering your dog also helps keep them from roaming around looking for mates!

There is a lot of good info on the web, and a really good site is healthypet.com. Hope this helps!

Yes, it is better to spay and neuter dogs. Spaying and neutering helps prevent certain diseases (mainly diseases involving the prostate, ovaries, and other organs like these). It also helps get rid of certain behavioral problems. It tends to reduce aggression between male dogs, it'll prevent your dog from marking everything in sight, it prevents roaming, and it'll make your dog a nicer pet when they're less focused on mating and more focused on you.

As far as the overweight part, though, that's more of a myth. A dog does not gain weight or lose weight because it's been spayed or neutered -- a dog's weight level is from how much it eats and how much exercise it gets. To keep your dog at a healthy weight level, you must feed it the right amount of food and give it lots of exercise.

It is good to spay and neuter your dogs and there are several reasons for this. Your dog will be more happy to stick around the home (less likely to run away). Male dogs will be less aggressive because there will be less testosterone in their systems. And perhaps most importantly, your dog will not get pregnant, nor get another dog pregnant. There are many puppies born each year that are unexpected and unwanted. However, I've got to say that the overweight business is completely false. If anything, your neutered pooch will gain weight and become less active. :-)

Unless you are in the show dog business I think it is...and I don't mean backyard breeders when I say show dogs. It makes the dog less aggressive but the overweight part comes from lack of exercise and too much food, not the neutering. An additional benefit is spaying and neutering dogs (and cats:)) means that thousands of unwanted pets are not killed each and every year.

Yes it is a great idea to spay and neuter them. A dog that is spayed or neutered has no chance of developing uterine or testicular cancer. Male dogs that are neutered are much less likely to roam, mark their territory (and your belongings) with urine, and show aggression toward other male dogs. By getting a female dog spayed you won;t have to deal with her bleeding for about 10 straight days twice a year. So I say do it. Here are some website to get it done at a reduced price www.spayusa.org.

It is good for the dog's overall health......If done young enough it helps with behavior issues and agressiveness (dog fights over mating rights)......and mostly...it stops unwanted litters that will end up being put down because no one wants them or they go to bad homes.
And yes, both those facts are true (though getting overweight is mostly due to too much food or eating people food)

not only does it make them less aggressive but it helps control the pet population that is out of control. Please spay or neuter your pet. There are so many unwanted animals in shelters and out in the world homeless and hungry because people haven't spayed or neutered their pets,

Of course it's better...most people are not responsible enough to be able to keep intact dogs without them procreating....
