Nothing is wrong with hugging friends in highschool. I did it everyday after every class I would hug my friends, and I never saw anything wrong with it and neither did any of my teachers. So just make sure you keep your hands above the booty and no one should have anything to say about it.

It can be construed as SAO (sexually acting out), especially since kids are becoming more openly gay who are gay, so there's no distinction between opposite sex and same sex hugging.
Personally, I feel that's taking things a little too far. Removing a personal touch from each other distances us from each other.
