There are several patents throughout the world concerning this technology. Normally, the electricity required to seperate the atoms negates the energy produced. A major breakthrough currently in development is using solar power for the electricity, then fueling homes and cars with the hydrogen. They have several working models, but they still cost over $150,000 US to set up.
Bush is pushing for ethanol, because the US is the largest corn producer in the world....making us the next "middle east" if ethanol is accepted as the next fuel supply. Personally, I like my Everclear in PJ.

Even compressed air could be a gasoline source, in simple terms think of approximately freeing the top of an inflated balloon. the concern is often to offer the gasoline affordably. The dream is to chop up water H20 into Hydrogen and Oxygen and to apply hydrogen as gasoline source. the concern is this is at present costly to offer Hydrogen, and makes use of extra power to offer it then if we in simple terms used that power to at as quickly as power the automobiles. It in simple terms potential we don’t comprehend how yet. inner combustion engines that run on hydrogen have been around for some years, yet what's being tried is to apply gasoline cells. Hydrogen is launched into one portion of a membrane, oxygen the different section. the two desire to be mutually so whilst they bypass via the membrane they produce electricity and as quickly as blended are in simple terms water. The electricity then powers the motor vehicle. I incredibly have seen the Honda prototype, and now they have a much better one, and it works. the concern is getting the hydrogen. The might 2007 prevalent technological know-how replaced into all approximately automobiles sooner or later.

Theoretically yes but hydrogen is difficult to store and transport. In order to be carbon neutral the electricty used will have to be from nuclear or natural sources (sunlight, hydroelectricty etc.) It would not be easy to replace all fossil fuels with energy from these sources

It can and it will (and probably is right now somewhere). Wind turbine gives green electricity to power electrolysis (solar panels too). That gives us "green" hydrogen. Use this to power local micro fuel cells -> non-intermittent localised energy in your home. Fuel cells due for roll out for domestic use circa 2010 - not long to wait. :-)
