I met my ex in a chatroom. We use to always meet up in there. After I met her, I didn't want chat anymore. She continued to go into chat and she calls those people her friends. They've never met, never talked on the phone, only possible emails and chatrooms. I think she's addicted. She's in there every night like clock work. Why do people become addicted to chatrooms?

Well she is an ex for a reason now isn't she? LOL! I think you can be "addicted" to anything actually. If it gives you a thrill and excitement and you spend hours and hours and hours doing it...well yea you are addicted. You know I had a gal that I interacted mostly through e-mail and we only got together 3 times in 9 months. I finally realized it was "unhealthy" because I only had a "sense" of her, not who she truly is...I mean I still do not know her really. I think you can only gather so much about a person through a chatroom or through e-mail. There is definitely a problem with intimacy and true sharing if you ask me. I mean it is mental, emotional, psychological and spiritual journey on this planet isn't it? I mean who is the person.? It is said that only 7% of communication occurs VERBALLY...how much communication occurs through just writing or chatting online??? Maybe less than 1%? Body language accounts for 94% supposedly. I think she may be addicted to keeping boundries and walls up IMO based upon research regarding communication and intimacy. I think some people think if you really knew them you would reject them so there is this secure boundry and you can present anything to anyone and be accepted...but it is on your terms, so it is in a sense a control mechanism. I mean this is a great question and I think a lot of folks are addicted to chatrooms and Myspace and places like that. But who is the Wizard behind the curtain so to speak??? I don't think I will ever know.

Yes and marriages can end because of them!

If your going to be in a chat room stay for only 10 minutes a day then walk away!

I don't believe that people can be addicted to chat rooms. I think that she is just striving for attention. Maybe she has social problems and can't communicate comfortably with people face to face.

Who cares, its social interaction. Everyone needs it, and after a long day of work id rather chat then go out.
