Because different countries have different speed limits. For example German Autobahns (where BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Porsche etc come from) do not have speed limits on their motorways.

Also, people can use their cars on tracks or private roads where the limits don't apply.

It's not against the law to make or to own a car that does 155mph, only against the law to go that fast on UK public roads.

If people want a slower car, there are plenty to choose from.

The majority of "FAST" cars in America are European cars. Speed limits vary depending on where you are (as the other person said, there is an unrestricted speed limit in Germany). Also, cars that can go 200mph+ are a "status symbol" in society. Since you have to pay an arm and a leg to buy them, people know you have lots of money if you own a Lamborghini.
The government also gets money for speeding tickets.. its like asking why they keep cigarettes legal when they kill so many people. They don't care about safety, they care about money.

Interesting argument, though it doesn't hold water, too bad really. Alcohol manufacturers aren't liable to consumers, Gun makers aren't liable for the actions of a criminal, etc, etc, etc.. I could go on and on,, only when a company doesn't disclose fully the inherit dangers of it's products, are they liable. I'm tired of everyone becoming sue happy and blaming everyone/everything else responsible for their own idiotic actions. You speed, consider the risks, evaluate chances, and act.. if you happen to be ticketed, it's likely that you commonly engage in the violation and have finally been caught. (Because we all do it, and aren't caught each time!) Interesting concept though, and it's fun to ponder for amusement sake. I get your point though. Another interesting perspective, is why make an engine capable of even exceeding 80 MPH is laws don't permit you to do so. I've often wondered why my speedometer goes to 120mph when I've never gotten it that high.. Have fun and be well! I'm not taking this as seriously as TEXAN, as I think your question is merely offering some observation and wit in regards to how ludricrous some people have become over idiotic issues. I think you get it,, I think everyone gets it, lol!

Mainly because most car companies also spend a lot of time and money making cars to race. They sell the performance cars to fans of racing.

Some laws have attempted to require putting some kind of restrictor on the engine to limit the top speed, but most of these flop, since it is so easy to just modify, bypass, or remove the equipment.

Besides, lawmakers wouldn't want to get to involved in slowing cars down - they make a lot of money writing speeding tickets, the faster the speed, the more money they make!!

Why not???? The faster a car is designed to go the safer it will operate with in a set speed limit.
You don't buy a central heating system for your home that will only be able to heat to a maximum of room temperature. It would be working to its ut-most limit and wouln't last five minutes.

Because of the acceleration of fast cars. You can get up to the speed limits quicker than ordinary cars. This is still legal as long as you dont break the speed limit.

Eg in the US they have big motors yet there speed limits are really low.

There are some occasions when a burst of speed are beneficial, for example when overtaking a large lorry. Completing the manoeuvre swiftly means you spend less time in the opposing lane, making it safer.

As others have pointed out, speed limits vary from country to country.

Although some cars are fast enough to reach a top speed in access of the speed limit, they are more comfortable and nicer to drive at cruising speeds on the motorways, which make them very popular.

coco 32. I'm a guy, and I think it's bad that they build cars capable of exceeding the 70mph speed limit. ALL cars should be limited to the max. speed limits, also save pollution & fuel.

Because having a vehicle that is capable of exceeding a speed limit does not force anyone to speed anymore than a woman having a vagina forces them to be a prostitute. You don't think they (vaginas) should be banned, do you?
