If you are looking to make and decorate your own wedding cake I advise against it. It takes many long hours to get a wedding cake doen and you do not want that stress the night before your wedding. Nor do you want a cake thats been sitting around for days on end.
If you are helping out a friend books like wilton will help but I advise getting lessons in person as their are certain techniques a book cant show you. There are also website that sell pre made flowers that you can place on weding cakes wo avoid the trouble of having to learn to decorate.

Wilton.com offers classes at many different locations. If you are planning on making your own cake...I wouldn't even try it. I make wedding cakes and sometimes it can take up to three days to get it all done and put together. If your looking for an inexpensive way to get a wedding cake see if you can pull all of your girls together and make a cupcake wedding cake. Super easy and they can look very nice and now you don't have to worry about having someone cut it. Then if you want a cake for you and the groom to cut make a small one and put it near the cupcake one. Hope this helps.

There are many different books you can buy. Just tell the bookstore employee to take you to the baking section of the bookstore and you should find one, pr just go on e-bay and buy one. There might even be free books online that explain how. If you wanted to take a course on it different culinary colleges (and some others) offer courses in cake decorating. I know that Culinary Institute of America has one.

You can take classes. Look up culinary arts schools in your area. My mom took classes back in the day when I was little and she taught me how to do it and her and I will be making my wedding cake and possibly the groom's cake too. It is really easy.

I would go to Micheal's or Acmoore and take a class or two!! You want plenty of practice if you going to make your own cake.
They also give you hints about how you can make the stuff in advance and freeze the flowers to use that day.... so your not killing yourself the day before the wedding.
