I would do the room itself in a color (like you said pink and blue are great) then get those wallies to decorate the room, or get someone who is a great artist to come paint things on the walls. I always like the chair rail look with some bold color on the bottom and something less on the top with the decorations on top. Let's see for princesses I would do that bright Aurora pink on the bottom and then above the chair rail have on each wall the princess and her castle. The bed would be a beautiful 4 poster white bed with pink or lavender tulle wrapped around it. The bedspread would be a beautiful satin pink duvet cover. For construction I would do the bottom in black with some yellow lines going through the middle like a road. Then on top I would have some different trucks and construction vehicles painted. The bed would be either a car or another 4 poster but with street signs on the top of his posts (easily exchanged later for something less childish when he outgrows the construction). Enjoy and think back to when you were a kid, what would you have wanted? But also remember kids are fickle and so change is inevitable!

Why not try different options such as buying bedsheet of Cars and making your own curtains, or even find the material at a fabric store and make your own. Anything can be made into curtains with alittle sewing.

My wife purchased our son's curtains @ K-Mart. I believe there is only 1 pattern & it's a valance. I can't remember the price, but K-Mart was the only place that carried it where we lived.
