Because I have kids I would rather entertain at my place instead of going to bars (all my friends don't have children yet), but do you think 30 minutes is too much for people to drive to our place.
I make really good food and have a variety of alcoholic beverages.

I insisted on designated drivers last time
Also, I have two extra beds for anyone to crash on if they drank too much

Ah heck no. I have driven to another state for a good ole party. 30 minutes is nothing.

Good friends will drive 30 minutes. Especially if it is an event related party like a birthday or Kentucky Derby, Super bowl, 4th of July with some activities. If all you have to offer is good food in a cramped kitchen not many will come back the next time. We used to hold large parties about an hour travel time for guests. These became well known and looked forward to because we had a creek and woods on the 20 acre property. We set up to eat outdoors and people could wander near and far in small groups for hours, play games, wade the creek, sit in the living room or gather in the kitchen and talk. In other words, for the effort of coming farther ther has to be something more to the party than standing in the kitchen with a paper plate and glass. It also seemed that the farther away the more a big party worked, it made it more an event and made a larger variety of activities possible. Do you have a good park nearby you could use?

30 minutes? Is that all? I would drive several hours for a great party, and have!!! And the better the alcohol involved the better for all concerned! Just make sure to have plenty of floor space for people to crash after getting too drunk to drive back home again! You would be the responsible party if anyone got into an accident, as you supplied the booze.

30 minutes isn't a long drive in my book. But like someone else said, it is best to have the party around a theme so it's interesting. Personally, I wouldn't drive 5 minutes for a party where all we're going to do is drink and watch TV or stand around in uncomfortable silence with people I don't know.

No, 30 minutes isn't that far. People will probably not come over every week but for an occasional party that shouldn't be a problem!

Well, that's the thing, alcohol. If people have to drive to your place for 30min, they have to drive back. Means they can't drink alcohol, then? Taxi will be expensive. For a party, driving 30 min is too much, however it's not much at all for me to pay my friend a visit.

I have reasons why I always live downtown.

Not at all.

Personally, dislike bars. Inviting them to your house is a personal gesture to share your home.

Re the alcohol. Do be careful. Alcohol is not necessary to have a good time. Do not let anyone drink and drive.

Have fun.

For any of your friends that don't want to drive...it's their loss...have a great time with the friends that consider a 30 minute drive worth it to enjoy your company and hospitality.

that is reasonable.

However, you should be aware that if any of your guests become intoxicated, and then drive and subsequently get involved in a serious traffic incident... you, as the host, are civilly liable for any ensuing damages.

Be careful about what and how much you serve.

In college, a road trip would take up to 3 hours, and result in food and fun. 30 minutes is no problem for me... When's the party?
