Just like the Bible, the Buddhist scriptures have been edited by many men who think what it should mean throughout centuries. Please understand that not everything written is true and many things are created by men.
It's very dangerous to follow every single word that another being said or written. Even Buddha tells us not to believe in everything that religions or Buddha says. Look at the Christians, many actually believe that every word from the Bible is the word of their God.

If we do good just to get into heaven, or avoid doing evil just to avoid going to hell, then the action looses all meaning because we are not doing it to help people, but rather for a reward. So, you are saying that if someone does not believe in heaven and hell, then they are not a true Buddhist? Funny, Buddha himself said:

“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it”
- Siddhartha Gautama -

I don't find this idea of heaven or hell to be logical, so I have the right to reject it. Please, don't try to define Buddhism, because our Buddhist beliefs are very personal.

Is this a word scramble or something? Find the missing verbs>? What's your game? The Buddha did not believe in an immortal soul.

I think I see what you're saying-if it's basically that Buddha had reincarnations and imbetween he saw heaven & hell, did he mean they werre locations or are they philosophical concepts? I haven't read on Buddhism (yet) but my understanding is that it's more of a philosophy and I don't think his interpretation is anything like the Old Testament descrioption of God or the New Testament description of heaven and hell. I would think he saw heaven and hell as temporary 'phases' of punishment or reward based on the individuals subconscious belief of what they had done.
