When shopping for a basic point-and-shoot camera all you need are 5 megapixels, says Consumer Reports' electronics editor Paul Reynolds. The reality is that the average consumer won't notice any improvement in picture quality unless he plans to enlarge the photo to poster size or heavily crop the images, he says. If you just want to print 4X6 inch shots, a 4 megapixel camera is fine. For 8X10's you should get at least a 5 mp camera, but 6 or more is desireable.
If you intend to just e-mail your pictures around to friends, aim for fewer megapixels so you don't fill their inboxes.

3 megapixels are good for taking snaps

5 megs and up. Sony, Canon, HP, Nikon are good ones.
