Last Friday my 8 yr old rat terrier/beagle mix got into the trash, ate a bunch of stuff, puked twice etc. Monday he got a steak bone from our dinner, ate most of it. I don't know exactly when it started, but maybe Wed or even Tues, he "heaves" or breathes hard, like backwards? He sucks air in his nose and acts like he can't breathe. He does this randomly (not like after drinking which our 6hr old Chihuahua always has). He has done it maybe 4 times a day. Is this a collapsed trachea? How did it happen? Or does he have part of that steak bone stuck somewhere?

My dog (he's a Jack Russell Terrier) does this once in awhile. It lasts for a few seconds and then he's fine. My boyfriend said every dog he's ever had does it. I would phone the vet just to be sure though.

it is not a collapsed trachea. if it was he would be dead. i would take him to a vet because it is possible that he could have a piece stuck in a place either in his throat or in his stomach. bones are not good for dogs because of the fact that they splitter when they chew it up. so he may a splitter somewhere and i would take him to a vet just in case there is a splitter.

It sounds to me that he has something stuck in his throat and it not taken care of soon may cause damage.

I'd be more worried about an obstruction and would take him to the vet immediately...

He has something stuck in there, and needs an Xray. Sorry.
