In spite of the non-scriptural excuses some religious people manage to scrape together to "justify" their opposition to homosexuality, it really all boils down to "the Bible (or Qur'an) says it's wrong, therefore it's wrong." So I'd have to say that there would be FAR less homophobia in the world if it weren't for religion perpetuating ancient prejudices.

Yes, because religious scholars will turn any scripture into what they think is "moral"...and if you read the story Sodom and Gomorrah (the most quoted) The people turned their backs on God, everyone was destroyed (including the angels that turned from God and "partied" with humans) because of disobedience not homosexuality. The second most quoted is that men should not lay with men the way he would lay with a woman. Does this mean anal sex? The Bible says not to eat pork. Both not having anal sex, and not eating pork were very good hygiene rules before we understood that heat kills bacteria, and learned about "safe sex". To go farther, Jesus died to create a new covenant between man and God, which everyone that wants to hate anyone else completely dis-regards. Prostitutes and lepers were the "lowest of the low" during the time of Jesus' life, yet he accepted them. The only "law" Jesus gave to us in the new covenant was...."love one another, as I have loved you" (unconditionally and without judgment)

Homophobia exists because of ignorance. Whether the Bible says anything about it or not.
The Bible commands us to love God and all men. Yet people all over hate each other for a variety of reasons.
Hense just because its in the Bible doesn't mean that people hate or don't hate.
Your premise is misguided.

Yes there would. We have it now, even though God speaks negatively about it. So, yes.
Drugs, for instance. There is not verse in the bible saying specificaly "Dont do drugs.".....and people do them, and dare to say "The bible doesnt condemn it - 'cause it doesnt say anything about it." The truth is, even if the bible did say (specifically) not to do drugs, those same people would still do drugs.

Much less, certainly. For myself, if I were certain that something would not displease YHVH, then I would be confident that it was a matter of preference, rather than principle. In matters of preference, total freedom is allowed.

I do not fear homosexuals, but their behavior does disgust me.
Not all of their behavior, mind you, just the part where a man feels compelled to use a part of his body as a rectal thermometer.
